International Labour Organisation top official visits Gadani

GADANI: The Director-General (DG) of International Labour Organisation (ILO), Gilbert F. Houngbo, accompanied by Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, visited Gadani to review progress on modernisation of the shipbreaking industry.

The chief of ILO inspected plots three and four of the Gadani Shipbreaking Yard and reviewed fire-fighting equipment and health and safety measures for waste management workers.

Industrialists briefed the top official of ILO on the Gadani modernisation project.

Provincial Minister Zahoor Buledi informed the visiting dignitary that under the Hong Kong Convention, Pakistan is moving towards ship recycling and establishing green yards. Federal Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain said that work is underway on a Rs12 billion modernisation project for the industry.

The ILO DG reviewed implementation of health, safety, and environmental standards, noting that adherence to SOPs and worker training has reduced accidents.
