Modi to take oath as India prime minister on May 26: party

NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi will be sworn in as Indian prime minister and form a government on May 26 after winning the general election in a landslide last week, his right-wing party said Tuesday.
“Narendra Modi's swearing-in as prime minister will be on the 26th,”Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh told reporters.
Modi was set to meet Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Tuesday to inform him of his intention to form an administration.
Earlier, he held an emotional meeting in the national parliament, his first since his triumphant victory, urging his party colleagues to dedicate themselves to serving the nation.
The 63-year-old leader bowed and kissed the steps of the building as he entered for a meeting of his Hindu nationalist BJP and its political allies, which elected him as leader in the parliament.
Speaking in the central hall of the complex in New Delhi, Modi had to hold back tears in a rare public display of emotion by the hardliner known to his supporters as the “Lion of Gujarat”.
“I said this earlier and I say it again: that 125 crore (1.25 billion) Indians' hopes and aspirations are embedded in this temple of democracy,” he said.
The BJP, elected on promises to revive the economy, is expected to steer India sharply towards the right after a decade in power by the left-leaning Congress party, which has dominated India since independence in 1947.

Have you ever seen a person Who is a 12 year CM, who is about to become Prime Minister, with such a back ground ?
This is real India and real democracy. Poor boy selling tea at single line railway platform 51 years back dreams, works and today elected as next PM of largest democracy in the world. well done India..

There is no doubt about his humble background but you forgot to mention his record as 2002 Gujarat Muslim Genocide. Was it another feather in his cap that he is about to become PM or really those were the only criteria which brought him into such a position to be so near to be the PM of such a big country. And what is the guarantee that he will not commit the same massacre on Muslim popularity what he did as CM of Gujarat back in 2002 and never regretted over his such brutal decision with the support of full state machinery

China does not have problem of religious and communal clashes. Its united by geography, language and a centralized, authoritarian but very efficient administration.
On the other hand India has problems of religious and communal conflicts. It has been spending a lot of its energy and resources in fighting with neighbors who were india only in the past. Its politics and govt has been harmed by regionalism and resultant inefficient coalition govts. Then the massive corruption in the system.
Now, the real race will begin. The India-China race for the world supremacy. The race of the century or more. These two giant nations, two oldest civilizations, with almost 40% of world population will compete for a lion's share in the world economy, geo-politics and soft power.
What a race it is going to be. Take a bow folks....and take your seats. It begins now!

Capitalism is being ADMINISTERED by the totalitarian Chinese government.India has to SELL,by education,persuasion and coaxing the population to believe in it.

About 65 years ago Indian PM declared that factories, dams and industry are the temple for tomorrow. The result is obvious today; with the help of a Maulana (religious teacher) Abdul Kalam Azad.
Today a new PM has taken the seat of democracy as a temple to fulfill dreams and aspirations of "All" Indians. As we say in United States, May God Speed. I, an atheist, say it with utmost reverence. Eventually it shall be a boon for all as prosperous India shall only set a good example for others to emulate.

Those hoping for a Vajpayee II in Modi are dead wrong. Vajpayee was a statesman, poet, tolerant and humanist who genuinely stood for co-existence with Pakistan. Modi is a complete opposite.

Yes indeed. Caste ridden India has produced Jagjivan Ram to Mayavati, Phoolan Devi to Modi- all who have come from the unprivileged strata of Indian society. On the other hand in Islamic Pakistan supposedly all men are equal, there is hardly any in the upper echelons of power who come from the ranks. Pakistan's ruling elite has been all top class from the nobility.

Nawaz had invited the then Indian Prime Minister for his oath taking ceremony though the latter insulted him by not attending. Modi should have invited Nawaz Sharif if he wanted peace with Pakistan and to add insult to injury, he did not mention the congratulatory phone call from Nawaz Sharif though he remembered the same from distant Japan and even Fiji. Was this not a deliberate insult?

@JPG - The we tackled western powers is by ignoring them and keeping them away. We did not allow western powers to make inroads in to India. We always stayed non-aligned in geo-politics and we always minded our own business. If you are firm and clear, then its not easy to persuade you or fool you. So the solution lies within us.
We are not going to fight with china. I am just talking about a natural, healthy and mutually beneficial competition. The next century belongs to India and China and competition is unavoidable. If we take it positively, we can learn from each other and help each other becoming even better.

@ROHIT PANDEY - Rohit well said. China and India started from opposite ends but they will meet somewhere in between. They are trying to become more like us, more democratic, more open and inclusive and we are getting more and more like them, centralized, consolidated and nationalist. The destiny of China and India are intertwined. I hope good sense prevails and it will be a healthy competition not a fight.
I also hope that Modi does not get too ambitious or get in to international politics. The tools of imperialists to control a nation from within. He must focus only on internal issues and putting right processes in place. We had set the processes of secularism, democracy and constitution above all since the beginning and results are there for all to see. In this new age, there are new realities and we need new systems in place. I believe the making of India is finally over. We have achieved one single nation, that can move as one unit irrespective of racial, cultural, religious plurality. We have turned our fault-lines in to our strength.
About the prized number one spot - Its our's for the taking and we shall have it. :)

- I don't know the full background of wealth /power/gondaism wielded by Modi's relatives while he was CM.
- I do know that during the CM tenure of Deve Gouda, his sons were gondas/thugs who abused power, who held wealth through proper/improper means. So you assertion does not meet the preconditions listed in @tathagta. I'm not either saying Modi meets those preconditions listed. I only know Devegouda does not meet.

Mr Modi should have invited ordinary pakistanis who also sell onion and potatos who don't have money to send their kids to schools they have nothing to do with terrorism as they are blamed.
By inviting Nawaz Sharif Mr. Modi only reinforced status quo in Pakistan.

If someone can start life by selling tea in railway stations and now he has become Prime minster of country, just because of his leadership qualities or people's trust he built because he makes things happen. A self made man, World media is comparing him to all great leaders of this century, from Putin, Margaret Thatcher to Deng Xiaoping. Let's see, whether he will match up to this and how Indian voters will vote in 2019 for his 5 year performance.
