NEW YORK: Hollywood stars have decided to boycott one of the area’s most famous hotels because of a harsh Islamic penal code introduced by Sultan of Brunei, who owns the hotel these days.

Beverly Hills hotel is owned by Brunei’s leader, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, leader of the the fifth richest country in the world.

Sultan of Brunei is known as one of the richest man in the world.

Hundreds of celebrities and the Beverly hills residents demonstrated on Tuesday and Wednesday in front of the fabled hotel which has become part of Hollywood legend.

Many Hollywood superstars are among the celebrities supporting the boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel and other hotels owned by Brunei’s. After a heated debate, the Beverly Hills city council unanimously voted to condemn Brunei.

The Beverly Hills Hotel is so ingrained in Hollywood culture that it’s hard to imagine it without the stars.

The Polo Lounge in the hotel is one of the best places in town to spot celebrities. The pink hotel opened in 1912 and has a storied history - Elizabeth Taylor lived there as a child and also as an adult with Richard Burton, says Variety magazine.

Aviator Howard Hughes resided on and off for about 30 years and more recently you could bump into Tom Cruise or director Steven Spielberg.
