Afghanistan produces around 90 percent of all opiate drugs in the world, but only recently became a major consumer - out of a population of 35 million, more than a million are now addicted to drugs. The NEJAT Centre is an Afghan response to vulnerable Afghan people, working with the communities for the prevention, treatment and care of drug users and HIV/Aids patients.

While it is unfortunate to even see a few hundreds addicted to drugs in a Muslim country, it comes as a surprise that there are only a million addicts in a country of 35 million people, especially in a country that produces 90% of opiate drugs (opium). Percentage wise, I bet Western countries have more addicts.
Having said that, I sincerely hope the Afghan government realizes this problem and control it's spread. Every addict not only does not contribute positively to the society, but eventually becomes a burden. If this problem is not addressed right away, it will multiply and later, it will be very hard to manage.

When the USA and NATO entered Afghanistan on the pretext of the WOT, many wondered WHY? Now sadly, what goes around, comes around. Not only are Afghanis suffering from heroin, millions of American children and adults - especially American military veterans from the recent operations in the Muslim world are now addicted to heroin. This heroin is the most pure and the most dangerous which has ever entered the Americas.
We always wondered, what was the real reason Afghanistan was so valuable to America? It's because of this "white gold" which many American military men and women are smuggling into the USA, and becoming millionaires due to this extremely vile addictive drug.
