KARACHI: The Sindh HIgh Court on Tuesday issued instructions against harassment of the Muttahida Qaumi Moverment (MQM) activist who was picked up when he was escorting home his bride from the wedding ceremony and then allegedly subjected to torture, DawnNews reported.

During today's hearing over the petition submitted against the alleged torture of the MQM activist, the SHC also sought the medical records of the activist and the police station's daily diary record.

The MQM staged a walk-out from the Sindh Assembly session for the second consecutive day against what it called extrajudicial killings of its activists.

In the beginning of today's session, Khwaja Izharul Hasan of the MQM protested against what he called the kidnappings and extrajudicial killings of its activists.

He alleged that the police was behind the enforced disappearances of MQM activists and further claimed that 45 party workers were being tortured under detention in several torture cells.

The MQM members staged a symbolic walk-out following Hasan's speech.

Speaking on the issue, provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said MQM should also listen to the treasury's point of view, adding that it was not appropriate to simply leave the house after giving its viewpoint.

Moreover, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, taking notice of a letter written to him by MNA Farooq Sattar, sought a report over the incident within 24 hours from Inspector General of Sindh police, according to a spokesperson of the prime minister office.

The spokesperson added that the prime minister had also issued instructions to ascertain those responsible for the incident.

The MQM on Monday, through its leader Dr Farooq Sattar, activist Fahad Aziz and his father filed a petition, impleading interior secretary, home secretary, director general rangers, IG Sindh and additional IG Shahid Hayat, SSP East and SHO Sharah-e-Faisal police station as respondents.

A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar, issued notice to respondent officials and chief provincial law officer, and adjourned the hearing till Feb 11.

Fahad Aziz was arrested at Shah Faisal area late on Saturday. Later the groom was shifted to a private hospital in Gulistan-i-Jauhar area of Karachi following complaints of stomach ache, according to police sources. But family sources claimed that the policemen had tortured the suspect, resulting in the deterioration of his condition.

Members of Aziz's family and leaders of the MQM staged protests in front of Karachi Press Club and the Chief Minister House demanding the release of the suspect following which four policemen, including the Investigating officer of the case, were suspended and a probe into the incident was initiated.

MQM members of the Sindh Assembly staged a walk-out on Monday to protests against the arrest and alleged torture.

This was their second walkout during the current session beginning on Feb 3 against, what they said, high handedness of police, pushing the MQM to the wall.
