GUJRANWALA: The Punjab government suspended from service on Saturday Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Chairman Dr Farhan Ibadat Khan and four other officers and initiated an inquiry against several others over negligence and inefficiency in paper marking.

A student of Government Girls College Daska (Sialkot), Seemab Zaheer, who was dissatisfied with the marking of her English paper in the intermediate annual examination 2013, submitted an application for re-checking of the paper.

Her paper was re-checked and four additional marks awarded bringing the total from 91 to 95. She was declared second in the overall result.

Similarly, another student Sikander Ali of Kamoki also challenged marking of his Islamiyat paper, while his marks were increased from 65 to 92 and he bagged the second position in the general group.

Board insiders claimed the chairman never spoke to Secretary Prof Amanullah on any issue nor accepted any of his suggestions. Instead he started a rift with him and stripped him of administrative powers of four branches — establishment, transport, administration and meeting — to make him an officer on special duty.

But the secretary did not react and went on leave for Haj after getting approval from the Punjab government. When he returned and resumed his duty, the chairman reportedly refused to accept his rejoining report.

When the Punjab government found out about it as well as anomalies in paper-marking, the education authorities immediately suspended the board chairman and gave his charge to Secretary Amanullah along with restoring all his administrative powers.

On the other hand, four board officers — Deputy Controller Inter Part-II Muneer Ameen, Assistant Controller Nasim Mehmood, Chief Secrecy Officer Ghulam Rasool and Clerk Malik Muhammad Afzal — were suspended from service, while Controller Examination Prof Muhammad Yasin was transferred.

An inquiry against teachers and professors deputed for marking papers was underway at the Civil Secretariat, Lahore, while some inquiries into other irregularities by board officers were being conducted by Rawalpindi Education Board Chairman Ghulam Muhammad Jhakkher.

Secretary and Acting Chairman Prof Amanullah confirmed that he would analyse the situation on Tuesday while all matters would be solved amicably according to the Punjab government’s directives.

MURDER: A woman was stabbed to death while her son and daughter-in-law

injured allegedly by their relatives over a petty issue in Francessabad on Saturday.

Shamim and her relatives allegedly attacked Sakeena with clubs and knives after the two had a quarrel over cleaning a drain. Sakeena died on the spot, while her son Khurram and daughter-in-law Nasreen were injured when they tried to intervene.

Police arrested Shamim while her accomplices managed to escape. A case was registered against them.
