Expiry of visa: Indian police give notice to Adnan Sami

MUMBAI: Pakistani musician Adnan Sami was given a notice on Tuesday by Mumbai police for overstaying in India after his visa expired earlier this month.
The 44-year-old singer and composer, who has made India his second home for the last several years, has been asked to reply to the notice explaining reasons for overstaying and efforts being made by him for renewal of the visa within a week, sources in the special branch of city police said.
His last visa was valid from September 26, 2012 to October 6, 2013.
Sources said Mr Sami had informed Mumbai police that he had applied for an extension of his visa in Delhi but failed to produce any valid documentary evidence to support his claim.
If he fails to reply to the notice and follow the norms prescribed for foreigners, the ministry of home affairs would be informed for taking appropriate action, they said.
The expiry of the singer’s visa came to light recently during the hearing of a court case between him and his former wife Sabah Galadari over possession of a duplex flat in Lokhandwala complex.
Following this, the film wing of Raj Thackeray-led MNS had demanded that Mr Sami be deported.
The singer had met M.N.S. Chitrapat Karmachari Sena leader Amey Khopkar on Saturday seeking their cooperation on the matter.
“Sami met us at our office seeking our cooperation. We told him to leave the country as his visa has expired,” Mr Khopkar had said.

Artists. directors and producers of WAAR, Mein Hun Shahid Afridi, Lamha, Zinda Bhaag, Raam Chand Pakistani, Siyaah, Bol, Khud Key Ley; are creating aopportunites for themselves in their own country. It is easy to immigrate from one country to another to cash-in your popularity. Sami etal have taken the easy option.
Watch Pakistanis dramas and see for yourselves the sheer talent, the strong scripts and technical prowess of our artists and technicians. There is no one in the region who can match that in the resources available to our entertainment industry.
Did India make dramas before Tanhayyan? NO. Did India have rock bands before the Pakistani rock-banks became popular? No. We have changed the music scene in the region but we falsely attribute this to India. Its our rock-bands that did it. Wake up !

When he left Pakistan, he should have gone and lived in Dubai. By staying in an enemy country, he should expect all this against him. Now he will end up in Dubai where he should have been in the first place. Now his country does not want him and the enemy does not want him. Homeless in the end!

LOL, This is really funny. First, India asked him to relinquish his dual Pakistani citizenship so he could apply for the Indian and now he's being rejected Indian citizenship and is no where to go but England. So, in the end he is back to square one with losing his Pakistani citizenship as well.

It will be unfortunate if he leaves because he hasn't really applied for visa extension. Regardless of meanness of MNS or others, he is entitled to stay and practice his craft, as long as he has a valid visa.

Any person with an iota of self-respect would immediately pack up and leave their host country. I guess, this so called singer cum actor lacks self-respect and would go to any extreme to earn money. I would understand if it was a first world country but to continue to live in India is beyond me....

@Striver: Music knows no boundaries. Most of the movies you mentioned are joint Indo-Pak productions, with actors from both sides of the border, too. A singer like Abida Parveen is treated reverentially in India. Some months back Kailash Kher actually gave a live performance in Karachi, with all its security concerns. Please have a broader perspective.

I think you are a proud pakistani. But, toooo proud for that matter. Rock bands have never been and will never be popular in india. The Rock band culture is not Pakistani but completely Western. However, singers have always been best in India since British era. Lata Mangeshkar, Rafi, Kishore kumar, Asha, Mukesh to name a few. Regarding Drama's, you surely don't know many Indian drama's hence think Pakistan has better drama's. Watch, Hum log, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Krishna, Henna, Buniyaad on youtube and you will know the quality of indian drama's. I suggest you stop comparing everything with India and work on your own progress.

@Iqbal: Very strange question! Since when has it become the "court" or "authorities" responsibility to tell a person (or convict) "where to go"!!! The court can only send a convict to jail!!! It is pathetic to see how just for some financial gain these types of black sheep of a community (country) would stoop so slow so as to try to boot-lick the people who hate you! Adnan Sami has a reasonable fan following in India and many like his singing. Many great artists from Pakistan have over the years made a big name for themselves in India and are also hugely liked and respected irrespective of what some extremists on either side may like to think. Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and even Rahat Ali Khan are treated like demi-Gods by their ardent fans. Adnan has all rights to be in India and practice his trade so long as he doesn't break any law of the land. And India always had a very long tradition in music and it neither needs to compete against another country nor feel threatened by good artists coming from Pakistan.

he is living in india from past 14 years.you guys may be talented but where people find opportunities they move there .no need to show talent in India else show that in your own country.why you guys compare with India , you people seem to be India phobic . you should compare yours country with china,us ,uk and other developing countries and you will get to know your level.

Frankly speaking Adnan Sami should have been kicked out long before. He seems to be an extremely dubious character, after his marriage collapsed with Zeba Bakhtiar, and later he took his son away absolutely clarifies what type of a person he is. There is no doubt that he is a fine singer, but then, one must be a fine person before being anything else.
