ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday felicitated President Asif Ali Zardari on completing his constitutional tenure as head of state, DawnNews reported.

President Zardari is the first elected head of state of the country who is set to complete his five-year term in office. He also has the distinction of addressing joint sittings of Parliament six times.

Prime Minister Sharif called upon the president at Aiwan-i-Sadr with the meeting lasting for over 30 minutes.

The two discussed the country's overall political situation, sources said, adding that both leaders agreed that in order to sustain the democratic set-up in Pakistan, it was imperative to move forward in accordance with the Charter of Democracy (CoD).

During the meeting, President Zardari said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would play the role of a genuine opposition and would also commend the government in instances and situations that merit praise.

The meeting also discussed matters relating to cooperation between the federal and provincial governments as well as the recent decisions of the cabinet on the law and order situation in Karachi.
