PESHAWAR: Pakistani authorities on Sunday accused the Indian army of cross-border shelling that killed a woman and wounded several other civilians in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

“A woman was killed and at least seven other villagers were wounded when Indian forces fired shells from across the Line of Control (Loc),” said local government official Masood-ur-Rehman according to AFP.

One the other hand the BBC Urdu website had quoted Rehman, who is the Deputy Commissioner of Kotli district in Azad Jammu Kashmir, as saying that the shelling from the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) had killed one woman and wounded nine other civilians.

The woman was the fifth Pakistani reported to have been killed in skirmishes across the LoC, which is the heavily militarised de facto border, since five Indian soldiers were killed on August 5.

Delhi blamed the August 5 killings on the Pakistani army, but Islamabad denied any responsibility and has called for restraint and dialogue.

Shells fired by Indian troops struck villages in Nakyal sector, some 200 kilometres south of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir, intermittently overnight, Rehman said.

Three houses had been damaged and one house and a car destroyed, he told AFP by telephone.

Local police chief Chaudhry Majid confirmed the casualties and said shelling from the Indian side was continuing.

Javed Budhanwi, an MP from the area, said that Indian shelling had caused panic among more than 50,000 local residents and warned that authorities may have to evacuate civilians to safer locations.

“It is difficult for people to move out at the moment as the shelling continues,” Budhanwi told AFP.

The intermittent clashes threaten to jeopardise a planned meeting between the two countries' prime ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

A deadly flare-up along the LoC in January brought a halt to peace talks that had only just resumed following a three-year hiatus sparked by the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

Why is not PM condemning this continuous violations? We want peace with India but not the cost of innocent lives.

DrTK Aug 25, 2013 08:15pm

The Taliban are killing us by the thousands; so why not the Indians? At least, they are our neighbors, unlike the Taliban, who are foreigners. Its open season on us Pakistanis. Let everyone have a go and perfect their killing techniques!

Pakistanis Please Note : This fence is 5km inside on the Indian side of the border and not the actual border. And all the pictures posted till date are of the Indian security forces guarding the fence. Why don't you guys post pictures of your own forces guarding the border ?

Gen Kayani delayed action against the terrorists on the pretext of national consensus. Which consensus is he waiting for now on LOC?

India does not seek conflict with its neighbours , but defending our country against external threat is our birthright. Pakistan should join the world community in eradicating the curse of terrorism from its soil. It is up to pakistanis whether they want to live in peace or not with india.

Both India and Pakistan should resolve these issues peacefully. This shelling of boarder villages issue covered in India and Pakistan media differently. Many news channels in India showing shelled border villages in Indian side of Kashmir. They are also broadcasting interviews of residents in affected area. Indian government and chief minister of Kashmir from Indian side giving statements by condemning provocative shelling of Pakistan army India and Pakistan blaming each other, Given Pakistan historical denials on Kargil conflict and role on Mumbai blasts, it is hard to believe Pakistan story.

The fact that the Indian economy is in "tatters" the indian rupee is dropping in value like a "lead weight" , The "only way to divert attention from the reality" is to create border tension along the loc, and this is what we are seeing. The indian army is "digging even a bigger hole for itself"

Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. Martin Luther King Jr., December 11, 1964
