KARACHI, June 11: A man belonging to a religious minority was shot dead while two others sustained bullet wounds in a gun attack on their car in Soldier Bazaar on Tuesday, police said.

The officials added that Hamid Chaudhry, 49, Salman Zaman, 22, and Osama, 17, were passing through Bretto Road in a Mercedes car (ADP-717) when they were targeted in a drive-by shooting.

All the victims were rushed to a private hospital, where Hamid was pronounced dead on arrival, the police said.

SSP-East Imran Shaukat said that the deceased belonged to the Ahmadi community. “He was a consultant in an engineering firm at Tibet Centre and was returning home in Gulistan-i-Jauhar from his office when he came under attack,” the SSP said.

The two other victims worked at his office, he added.

A spokesperson for the Jamaat-i-Ahmadiya, Mr Saleemuddin, told Dawn that Hamid Sami was an office-bearer of their organisation in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. He said Hamid was running an account firm that he had inherited from his father, Sami.

So far, Jamaat-i-Ahmadiya’s over two dozen members and office-bearers had been killed in Karachi only and almost all of them were professionals, including doctors, he said.

Mr Saleemuddin said Hamid Sami was returning home from his office as a matter of routine when gunmen attacked him in his car from both sides. Resultantly, he sustained multiple bullet wounds and died, the spokesperson added.
