PESHAWAR: Newly elected Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) provincial lawmaker Fareed Khan was shot dead Monday by unknown gunmen in Hangu in restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said.

Fareed Khan's vehicle came under fire near his residence near Singair village in Hangu. Police said the lawmaker and his driver were killed, while his brother Shahnawaz was injured in the attack.

Khan had won the May 11 general election as an independent candidate, and had later joined the PTI, the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He won the PK-42 seat by securing 16,129, defeating influential Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) candidate and two times MPA Attiqur Rehman, who received 12,680 votes in the polls.

PTI chairman Imran Khan condemned the incident.

"Strongly condemn the murder of PTI MPA Fareed Khan from Hangu. May Allah give his family strength to bear the loss. My prayers go out to them," said the PTI chief.

Imran also telephoned KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and directed him to immediately make efforts to arrest the killers.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the killing from any militant group.

A 'common man'

Fareed Khan was described by many as an honest and a ‘man of the masses’.

Although he originally belonged to Orazkai Agency, Khan had been living in Hangu for many years.

Reportedly, Fareed Khan only had one Rs100-note in his pocket at the time of submitting his nomination papers for the elections. The 41-year old lawmaker had also been a student of the Fine Arts Department at the University of Peshawar but was unable to complete his higher education.

He was the only independent MPA to join the PTI without putting forth any conditions.

In an informal chat with following the oath-taking ceremony of the KP assembly, Khan alleged that political parties had offered him millions of rupees to join them, but he opted to join the PTI as he believed it would resolve the problems of the masses.

Suspect arrested

Police claimed to have arrested the alleged killer of the PTI MPA along with three other suspects and they are currently being interrogated.

Police sources claim that Mufti Hamid – the alleged mastermind of the attack – with three other suspects have been arrested from the areas of Hangu. The police also claimed to have seized the motorcycle and the Kalashnikov rifle used in the attack.

The district police officer Sajjad Khan, however, said that they have made some arrests and are investigating but could not disclose their names as the investigation process is currently underway.

Mufti Hamid is said to be affiliated with TTP’ Mullah Nabi Hanfi group and was involved in different terrorist activities in Hangu.

farhan Jun 03, 2013 06:59pm

A sad reminder of the dirty game of pakistani politics and pakistanis living in the dark ages. Sincere condolences to Fareed Khan's family and may his soul rest in peace.

a Jun 03, 2013 07:09pm

A sad day for Pakistan indeed.

javeed Jun 03, 2013 07:11pm

Very Sad & heart breaking news.Highly condemnable. Recently I was so happy to hear that Such an honest person is a politician but now what to say...I am speechless, May God provide him the highest place in Jannah.

hamza Jun 03, 2013 07:31pm

Its a well plained political murder, and unfortunaitly we dont expect any positive respons in farviour of Farid Khans family. GOD bless Farid Khan

abdussamad Jun 03, 2013 07:37pm

May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him entry into Jannat ul Firdous. May Allah produce more leaders like him for us who can lead the ummah out of dire straits.

Moeen Jun 03, 2013 07:49pm

Ina Lillah hey Wa Ina illehey rajeoon. When Pakistan needs honest men, such men are made silent. What a tragedy with this country.

Dr. Khalid Jun 03, 2013 07:58pm

May Allah rest his soul in peace. He should be declared as a national hero and a day of memorial should be nominated in his honor.

HM Jun 03, 2013 07:59pm

Sad day for Pakistan. It does not look the work of terrorists rather of political rivalry.

Athar Jun 03, 2013 08:00pm

Imran Khan now you blame to MQM for your purchased law maker to whom U may spend lot of mony for his loyalty. Tv anchors & other generalist also do not wait to blame to MQM. Media is the biggest enemy of Karachi residents.

Waqas Jun 03, 2013 08:05pm

...May Allah rest his soul in peace and may the perpetrators be caught and brought to justice, Ameen. It seems like this is something the 'rest' (as the news report calls them) of the political parties would do. I personally didn't like the decision by PTI of not giving the the elected ministers in KPK any security escort or protocol. Sadly, this is Pakistan, not a Scandinavian country. PTI should not let this act of terrorism change their resolve for 'tabdeeli'.

Junaid Hashmat Jun 03, 2013 08:07pm

This is really a shocking news to hear. Why would someone kill such an honest person ? Why would someone target such person who defeated the JUI (F) candidate in his strong hold ? Why would someone kill PTI's member when they are putting pressure on the government to resolve the issues of people of FATA ? A sheer example of conspiracy, brutality plus revenge. I pray for the soul of this brave man. May ALLAH bless his soul. Ameen. KPK chief minister must bring the culprits to justice at once.

Athar Jun 03, 2013 08:13pm

Dawn Adminstration You are very biased & never publish the comments which is in not your favor because if you will publish then you will not get the financial & other resources from Political parties & the from the Buracracy.

Akhtar Hussain Javed Jun 03, 2013 08:18pm

May his soul rest in peace. This incident shows that so called militants are not willing to take part in peace talks and being a supporter of PTI I think PTI should never talk to militants.

Najamuddin Jun 03, 2013 08:27pm

May God bless the soul of Farid Khan in eternal peace and It is hard to believe that he is shot to death by any Taliban terrorist. They would have easily killed him during his election campaign. He had enough reason to be killed that he was a common man who had only Rs.100 when filing his candidature papers and that he had defeated the professional politician and party who been winning from that constituency since long. He was a true and sincere servant of poors and exploited masses opposing corruption and terrorism. I guess he became victim not of religious terrorists but the terrorists of corrupt political Mafia like another PTI senior lady member of Karachi was also shot to death?

hamza Jun 03, 2013 08:31pm

This feels like such a personal loss. We have been aspiring to find men like him among our rulers for decades. Shock, anger and sorrow aside, this is a true test for PTI to bring the culprits to task and prove that it meansa business and criminals and murderers will not get away, this time, Inshallah!

Imran Jun 03, 2013 08:39pm

Still think we should negotiate with the TTP?

Shahid Masud Jun 03, 2013 08:45pm

Pakistan is not a place for good and honest people

jdshami Jun 03, 2013 08:47pm

And the Tsunami Khan wanna talk to these criminal TALIBANS..................................

Junaid Jun 03, 2013 08:57pm

May Allah give him Jannah. If have more of Fareed Khan like in our political system, Inshallah Pakistan's problems can be reduced a lot.

Fawad Rehman Jun 03, 2013 09:08pm

RIP Fareed Khan, may Allah give strength to his family to bear great lose. My queation is Why Imran Khan is still silent on this incident? As we have seen in the past, Imran accused Altaf Hissain without any evidence. What if this incident had happened in Karachi? Would have been same

naz Jun 03, 2013 09:12pm

Pakistan is very unfortunate to loose an honest person like him.

saqib Jun 03, 2013 09:14pm

Inna Lillah hi wa inna Alihay Raajiooon.... Allah swt says (summarized) when shirk and corruption (sexual, moral and otherwise) becomes excessive in a society (especially Muslim) then Allah swt will send his Azab on the people.. and it will come like the waves of ocean each following the other and last bigger than the first... We as a nation should ask forgiveness from Allah swt for our sins... as the person being killed doesn't know why he was killed and the person killing doesn't know why he is killing .. (this is a form of Azab from Allah swt) ....

Daniyal Farrakh Jun 03, 2013 09:16pm

This is just so sad, such deplorable acts of crime against honest politicians. Apart from lingering energy crisis in the country, terrorism has to be tackled on war footing in this country. Enough is Enough, open your eyes!!

Salman Mk Jun 03, 2013 09:23pm

Uff... Whats going on ? 1st time the only true person selected from our area (Hangu), look what happened ? I wish I had some power, I wish....

khan Jun 03, 2013 09:43pm

Now show what you got...............

Azriel Jun 03, 2013 09:46pm

No place for good men in this world. RIP Fareed khan

Tamilselvan Jun 03, 2013 09:52pm

May his soul rest in peace. Pakistan and its people must realize the pitfalls of giving too much importance to terrorists who are killing innocents by the hundreds in the name of religion. When will an honest muslim stand up to these thugs

Sajid Jun 03, 2013 09:57pm

Mr. Khan, we don't wan't your condemnation like other leaders. We have voted you in because we want to see the killers captured and due justice served.

H L Jun 03, 2013 10:14pm

May Allah have mercy on his soul and give courage and patience to his family members.

Khan Jun 03, 2013 10:19pm

Plan is clear in KP. JUI is not in mood to play or let play. The TTP is in their pocket. They are going to hit PTI men hard like they did ANP. They will create confusion and insecurity by going after PTI lawmakers. PTI will go after Talibans just like ANP and the then we have a war on our hands. Next election JUI will win with a landslide and land goes back to Talibans.

Qureshi Jun 03, 2013 10:20pm

It is interesting that when killing happens in Karachi, Imran Khan immediately points the finger. While he does not have guts to point finger in KPK?

Ihtesham Jun 03, 2013 10:37pm

Does Fazlur Rehman like to be out of the power corridors? Isn't he flexing muscles to show its colors out of assembly if not in? Remember TTP is his right hand.

Anwaar U. Huk Jun 03, 2013 11:00pm

May Allah protect the people of KP and rest of Pakistan as well and may He bless the family of Fareed Khan and grant him a high abode in Paradise. Insha'Allah, may these killers (and others like them who have created havoc in the country) be brought to justice and humiliated Ameen.

Oh Allah! Guide the people of Pakistan to what is best for them according to Your Pleasure. Ameen.

independentthinker Jun 03, 2013 11:05pm

Another casualty! We can't afford to see this happening. Already, we have very few good people who have come forward to help bring the change to Pakistan, that we all so desperately need. And if this is how we provide them with security, I am afraid either they will be hesitant to come forward or they might end up with the same fate, as Fareed Khan. We need to provide every elected leader with extra security, so that they are able to move forward with their agenda. Change in our country will be possible, only if these honourable individuals are encouraged to come out without fear and given the protection that they so rightly deserve. Much more than our previous previous elected leaders.

Muthu Jun 03, 2013 11:25pm

Is IK still interested in talking to TTP? I think the murdered guy's family would prefer drones anytime. Jun 03, 2013 11:27pm

This happened because of negative politics from Imran Khan. This poor guy ran independent and joined PTI and the result was his assassination. Thank God , Imran didn't declare that Fazlur Rehman did it like he earlier convicted Altaf Hussain as if he is the Supreme court

kambohguy Jun 03, 2013 11:54pm

May Allah grant him his deserved place in jannah....whoever talks peace is being taken out....

azam Jun 03, 2013 11:57pm

I think Molana Fazul rehman is involved since he is not finding his feet these days this is a blatant act of violence and dismay

mian waheed Jun 04, 2013 12:22am

It is really very sad & tragedic.

Salman Khan Jun 04, 2013 12:27am

Tragic .. may Allah (swt) give him janat al firduas. Ameen. Maulana is closely associated with TTP ..that's all I got to say!

rosh Jun 04, 2013 12:49am

They still want to negotiate with these people who kill innocent and honest, destroy schools and hospitals.

Sandeep Kumar Jun 04, 2013 01:22am

He might be having just 100 rupees but he worthed more than 100 million to nation.. May god bless his soul and give many more such leader your nation.

abdul Jun 04, 2013 02:06am

I hope that this will wake up Mr Imran Khan who believes that talking to the Taliban is a viable strategy

abdul Jun 04, 2013 02:13am

Negotiating with the Taliban is the only option Mr Imran Khan

Satyameva Jayate Jun 04, 2013 03:14am

Reality Check for those who shout: "will shoot down the drones" and "will talk to the terrorists" and "America in Afghanistan is the ONLY cause of terrorism"

Bill Hicks Jun 04, 2013 03:19am

So Khan Sahib, is it still not Pakistan's war?

pakistani Jun 04, 2013 03:22am

Hope Allah give highest reward to Fareed Khan. Hope IK will no go on TV and Blame JUI's chief for his murder as he did to MQM chief.

Hasan Hasni Jun 04, 2013 03:29am

What more to say, I am lost of words. Inna lilLahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon

fida sayani Jun 04, 2013 04:48am

It is rare to find a honest man in Pakistan and if by chance we do get one, the cruel world does not give him an opportunity to deliver his kindness to the poor masses whom he represent. sad story of Pakistan.

Ashok R. Prabhu Jun 04, 2013 05:10am

The shooting down of the newly elected Provincial Lawmaker Mr.Fareed Khan is highly deplorable and the act must be condemned in the strongest terms.

saima Jun 04, 2013 05:34am

May Allah forgive his sins and give his family Sabr-e-jameel. Amin

Amir Jun 04, 2013 06:02am

There is no place for honest, hard-working, and dedicated people in Pakistan. A man who refused millions of Rupees and joined PTI for what he believed is the right thing to do has been gunned down by some cowards. We need people of character in Pakistan as they are a very rare commodity. We wasted one already.

K.A.Muhammad Jun 04, 2013 06:20am

Mullahs, Maulvsi, Muftis, Immams primarily have moral obligation to dispense justice and if found guilty award punishment according to the nature of ones wrong doings. If innocent, he or she is to be set free.

What Moral Wrong (Sin) or Legal Wrong (Crime) Mr. Fareed Khan had committed? where, when and by whom he had been tried-Court of Law?

Titles and Designations are neither license to kill, nor do they justify killing of anyone without proving guilt!

Nadir Jun 04, 2013 06:33am

May Allah grant eternal peace to the departed souls and the strength and courage to their respected families. It is indeed a very sad day for Pakistan that people like Fareed Khan, a commoner, who, was keen to serve the people of Pakistan honestly, are killed by extremists who are enemies of the state. I pray, that this incident becomes a catalyst to bring not only his killers to book but also the people involved who created the extremist organization behind the murder. Then only we can look forward to face the future with confidence and hope.

Bilal Yasin Jun 04, 2013 09:16am

Big powers have started derail the budding system. Allah we need your help to over come this.

Mirza Baig Jun 04, 2013 10:17am

I am amazed how come Mr Imran Khan didn't blame Moulana Fazl-ur-Rahman on this loss yet.????????????lol

Sohail Jun 05, 2013 03:43am

May Allah forgive his sins and give his family Sabr], Ameen
