KARACHI: Sindh's Archive Minister with the additional charge of special education, Rafique Engineer belonging to the Pakistan People's Party died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday, DawnNews reported.

The funeral prayers of the PPP leader would be held at the Eidgah ground in Karachi's Lyari area after Asr prayers.

The PPP activist from humble beginnings who rose to become a Provincial lawmaker hailed from the Lyari area of Karachi.

The Member of Provincial Assembly suffered a heart attack at his residence and was pronounced dead on arrival at a private hospital.

The deceased began his political career with the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) during the era of Ziaul Haq and associated himself with the People Students Federation in his college years.

He then became the general secretary of the People Youth Wing's Karachi division. and later served as the general secretary of the party's Karachi wing.

He was elected as an MPA in the 2008 elections from Lyari area of Karachi and was given the portfolio of the Katchi Abadi.

Later he became the provincial Minister of Archives with the additional charge of special education.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf expressed deep sorrow and grief over the passing away of PPP lawmaker Rafique Engineer on Tuesday.

Chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain also sent his message of condolence over the death.
