Three killed

TAXILA, April 17: Three people were killed in separate incidents in the limits of Wah Saddar police station on Tuesday.

Imran Ali, 8, along with his brother Kamran Ali, 10, was crossing G.T. Road near Losar Sharfoo bus stop when a speedy car knocked them down injuring both brothers. They were rushed to a hospital where they died.

In another incident, five armed men shot dead Umair Ahmed near Wah Garden over a petty dispute. The family sources said the attackers were Afghan nationals. His body was handed over to the family for burial after autopsy at THQ hospital, Taxila. — Correspondent

Man dies in accident

ATTOCK, April 17: A man was killed and nine others sustained injuries in a road accident on Kohat-Pindi Road in the limits of Fatehjnag police station on Monday evening.

Police said a Kohat-bound coach coming from Rawalpindi overturned near Dhoke Raski. As a result, Ali Sher, a resident of Kot Sarang, died on the spot while nine other passengers received serious injuries. The police shifted the body and the injured to the THQ hospital. — Correspondent

24 POs arrested

ISLAMABAD, April 17: The capital police arrested 24 proclaimed offenders (POs) and court absconders involved in heinous crimes in a fortnight during a crackdown, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bani Amin Khan had directed the police officials to ensure arrest of proclaimed offenders (POs) and court absconders. Following the instructions, the capital police launched a crackdown and succeeded in apprehending the outlaws.

The City and Saddar Zones police arrested seven absconders each. The Industrial Area and Rural Zones nabbed two and five absconders, respectively. Similarly, Crime Investigation Agency also apprehended three absconders. —Staff Reporter

Statement hailed

ISLAMABAD, April 17: All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (Apnec) welcomed the statement of President Asif Ali Zardari regarding 8th and 9th wage board awards.

Speaking at the Apnec award ceremony held at the Presidency the other day, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed hope that the newspapers’ management would also implement 8th and 9th wage board awards soon after their constitution.

In a statement, Apnec termed the gesture of President Zardari as a people-friendly policy of the ruling party.

The Apnec office-bearers demanded that the information ministry should initiate efforts to form the 8th wage board award so that financial woes of the newspapers’ workers could be redressed. —A Reporter

Area education officers

ISLAMABAD, April 17: Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has nominated 21 area education officers in the rural and urban areas who would coordinate with the district health officer during the upcoming anti-polio campaign.

According to a source, the FDE has provided a list of teachers to the district health officer who will support efforts of the district administration to achieve the desired target during the campaign.

The training is also being provided to them and officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) are also participating in this training programme.

Keeping in view the important role of teachers in a society, the source said the Federal Directorate of Education would be requested to further expand their cooperation in other health campaigns in the capital. The CDA and District Health Office, Islamabad have finalised arrangements for the training of the volunteers. — APP

Dilapidated road

ISLAMABAD, April 17: Motorists have to face trouble while passing through Airport Road which is in a dilapidated condition due to wrangling between civic bodies of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Being one of the main links between the twin cities, the road is extensively used by motorists.

Ironically, the section between Flying Club and Koral Chowk is neither owned by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) nor the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) and both the civic organisations put the onus of maintenance on the other. — APP
