PESHAWAR: Unknown assailants on Monday shot dead a Special Branch sub-inspector in the limits of Chamkani police station here.

Police identified the official as Iftikhar. An official said the slain was coming out of a mosque in Chughalpura locality when armed men opened fire on him. The injured was rushed to the city’s Lady Reading Hospital in critical condition, where he died of wounds.

The attackers managed to escape from the scene, and police said apparently it was an incident of targeted killing.

In another case, the Counter-Terrorism Department recovered a five kilogramme bomb and arrested two accused. BDU later defused the bomb.

A CTD statement said acting on a tip-off that militants were trying to enter Peshawar from Khyber Agency they arrested two suspects near Karkhano Market checkpost of Hayatabad police station.

It said they recovered an explosive device, two hand gerunds and a pistol from the accused persons. The accused were identified as Shah Afzal and Sajjad, who had been involved in attacks on police.
