We are fighting terrorism to secure future generations, says Gen Raheel

QUETTA: The Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif said that only a secure Pakistan can be a prosperous Pakistan and our fight against terrorism and extremism is not for today but for our future generations.
While addressing the audiences at Command and Staff College in Quetta on Thursday, the army chief emphasised on the complex and ever-changing nature of threats to the national security.
According to a report on Radio Pakistan, the COAS told his audience that security threats are complex, multidimensional and hybrid in character, rendering traditional response mechanisms irrelevant.
Wars are not fought by the army alone, he said, adding that the whole nation's efforts are necessary in order to be successful.
Gen Raheel said that only a secure Pakistan can be a prosperous Pakistan, and that the country's efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism will impact future generations.
The COAS said Operation Zarb-i-Azb is a strike against terrorism in urban centres.

Quetta grenade attack
Five men were injured when unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade at a former wine distillery situated on Quetta's Kawari Road on Thursday.
The attackers sped away on motorbikes before police and Frontier Corps personnel reached the scene of the attack.
The injured were taken to Civil Hospital Quetta.
The Pakistan army has been waging a major campaign against Taliban and other militant strongholds in the North Waziristan tribal area since June last year and authorities have now vowed to intensify operations both in border regions and across the country.

I am Indian ..But till now I have been quite impressed with Pak's COAF Mr Raheel Shareef. He has shown quite mature attitude towards Terrorism, Yemen, China and Afganistan. Some of hsi policies might not be good for India. But as long it is in interest of Pakistan, he is doing his job. Respect to him.

The general is right. I hope he also understands these militants are waging a war of 'a thousand cuts' against the state that they do not or no longer identify with. Strategy of a 'thousand cuts' was employed by Zia against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Words alone are not enough,everyone seem to write we are with you general,but the reality is,unless the public is vigilant,the people of Pakistan must come together and work together.Imagine 2 guys on a motorcycle driving thru a busy street open fire and kill innocent people,those guys are never caught,no one sees a thing,people of Pakistan need to stop dumping every responsibility on the army and do their part to help in getting rid of this menace called terrorism.

This problem was created by them and they are fixing it and taking credit of fixing it, they never strengthen the institution. Look what they did and how they used Imran Khan to take full control of foreign policy and administration also in case of Sindh and Baluchistan. It is not going to work believe me, we need to give powers to people who have public support weather we like them or not and let them expose in front of public. These quick fixes never work for any country.

I appriciate the zeal with which pak army is fighting with ,but there needs to be some improvements in their in approach.now dont expect from me I m not expert at this but as one can see army kill one terrorist 4 are ready to fill the gap.

Recently, I started hating this man for what he is doing.... it has come from within... only then i realized that his acts are hurting Indian interests, which means he is doing the best job for Pakistan. This man is a real gem pakistan has got. What the people and politicians will do along with this man matters.
If they chose to emulate the direction he is setting and stand with him, Pakistan will soon become a progressive nation, else if the politicains are working only for their personal gains and people are influenced by madarssahs, pak dives into an abyss.

If he is serious about terrorism, he should start with Madarassa, he should start with Saudi Arabia, he should start with Qatar.. terrorism is just the manifestation of much deeper problem in that society. You can't cure cancer just by treating headache or fever. You need multiple treatments of surgery, chemo and radiation. Similarly you have to tackle terrorism from within. I don't think people of pakistan fully comprehend the reasons. i can fully understand as it is very difficult to look at the foundation of the very society that made you. but that is what humanity has been doing for thousands of years or else we would still be living in jungles...we have always challenged the status quo, the very definition of us.

@subnay - I believe that General Raheel does understand the intricacies behind dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar. He will tread water very carefully yet with the resolve of what lies ahead for the nation. He is a genuine leader that we desperately need to get out of this situation and he has been doing an outstanding job ever since he took charge of the armed forces. If Kiyani had done only half of what he has done in this short time, we would be in a much better position. But, we have to move forward and cannot afford to worry about what happened in the past. We need to make sure that we do not make the same mistakes that have gotten us where we are today. God bless Pakistan and all those who are trying to keep it together.

The terrorists have many supporters and the loopholes in the rules which often saves them e.g. Military court sentence regarding Peshawar APS carnage, now pending in the court; added to it is non- implementation of parliament's legislation on military court in letter and spirit. Looks like we have reached the dead end ; which allows terrorist to win and we to lose. God save Pakistan.

For the first time, I have heard a leader of ours speak of " future generations ", never before have I heard that.
Gen Raheel Shariff, is the right Army Chief for the present situation.
He is doing an admirable job for the security of the country.
When he retires, I would like to see him connected in some way to the betterment and progress of Pakistan, possibly joining P TI, a party of Reformers, committed to turning around the fortunes of the country.

Kudos to the Pak Army Chief for his noble objective to eliminate terrorism completely in Pakistan. However it is easier said than done and would require sweeping changes in education, foreign and domestic policies both at civilian govt and establishment's levels. As long as the state's mindset continues to differentiate between good and bad terrorists and support is taken by political parties from the sectarian outfits, it will be a Herculean task to eliminate terrorism completely from the country. The mantra of zero tolerance to all types of terrorism is only way to bring peace and prosperity in Pakistan.

But, why it took so long to for the leadership of this country to decide how we have to make correction of what we did wrong 30 years back ?
What about other issues, like one education system for everyone, good health system for everyone, clean & fresh drinking water for everyone, cheaper access to utilities (electricity, gas) for everyone and so on....?
