FAISALABAD, Nov 24 The city district government is working on a project to generate electricity with the help of solid waste to overcome power deficit, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Saeed Wahla told a press conference here on Tuesday.

The Punjab government would also undertake such plans in other cities, he said.

Mr Wahla said that Faisalabad produced 1,200 tons of solid waste every day, of which the Solid Waste Management Department could treat only 70 per cent.

He said that under the Faisalabad Area Up-gradation Programme, seven waste lifting vehicles had been provided to the city however, all the vehicles were out of order.

He said the administration had planned a cleanliness drive and sanitary workers would be deployed in all union councils aided by 157 rented vehicles to clear the entrails of sacrificial animals, and that main roads would be washed after Eid days.

The leaves of sanitary staff have been canceled while special teams have also been made to collect and remove the offal and entrails of sacrificial animals. Similarly, 113 loaders and 24 pickups were hired to dispose animals' entrails to the nearest collection centres, he said, adding the solid waste management vehicles would shift remains to the dumping sites outside the residential city areas.

He urged people to wrap offal in bags and place it at a prominent place near their houses.
