GILGIT, Nov 1 The 63rd independence day of Gilgit-Baltistan from the Dogra rule was observed on Monday with zeal and renewed pledges to endeavour for the development and integrity of the country.

The day dawned with special prayers in all mosques of the region for the solidarity of the country and freedom of Kashmir.

Later, small and big rallies were taken out by civil society, political parties, students, scouts, government officials and other organisations from different points that converged at Chinar Bagh.

Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah and Governor Wazir Baig addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of the day. They urged the people to forge unity among their ranks.

The GB CM and governor laid down floral wreaths on the graveyard of the heroes in Chinar Bagh.

Various students and police and scouts personnel performed dance and presented a marched past.

Separately, a number of events were held across the region that included a mushaira, a polo tournament at Shahi Polo ground, debates and speech contests.

The radio Pakistan Gilgit and Skardu aired special programmes on the occasion highlighting importance of the day. Stringent security measures were adopted by the police across the region.

ASSEMBLY SESSION The Business Advisory Committee of Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly met on Monday under the chair of Speaker Wazir Baig and discussed the business of the ninth session of the house to be started today (Tuesday) at assembly hall, Chinar Bagh. The meeting also finalised agenda for the session.
