ABBOTTABAD, March 30: A committee of the district council on small dams has asked the MPAs from Abbottabad district to take up the issue of construction of two small dams with the provincial government as the initial funds approved and released by the previous government for the purpose under the World Bank’s drought programme have been allocated to a few union councils.

A meeting, presided over by the committee chairman Azam Khan, was held here on Saturday. The meeting was also attended by all members including District Nazim Mustafa Jadoon and Naib Nazim Javed Abbasi.

On this occasion, MPAs from Abbottabad Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani and Qalandar Khan Lodhi were also briefed about the issue.

It was informed that the NWFP governor had allocated Rs45 million under the drought programme for the construction of two small dams at Harro and Rajoya, but it could not be utilized.

The district council members took up the issue with the government as the same funds were re-allocated for water supply schemes of few union councils with the approval of the World Bank.

According to the councillors, if the funds were to be re- grouped, then it should be distributed among all the 46 union councils of Abbottabad district without discrimination.

The meeting decided that the committee and members of the provincial assembly would meet the provincial senior minister, who is head of the committee, and would request for the re- consideration of the allocation of funds and start construction of the small dams.
