Larkana: roads in bad shape

Published November 23, 2010

POOR road and traffic conditions in Larkana need immediate attention of authorities.

Although much work has been done to widen the roads and improve their quality, it seems to be a wasted effort.

Encroachments, pushcarts, vendors, shopkeepers occupy not only footpaths, but a major portion of roads meant for traffic. Unauthorised parking on both sides of roads ensure that free flow of traffic is regularly obstructed.

In addition, unchecked disregard of every traffic regulation by drivers of all kinds of vehicles and the lack of interest by the traffic police in enforcing these regulations make the use of these roads a living hell in the city of Larkana.

Heavy vehicles' parking and unhindered use of city roads by them cause massive traffic jams and choke the three bridges of the city almost every day.

Once the opening of the new bridge between Larkana and Khairpur districts takes place, the situation will be out of control.

Now is the time to act. I suggest that a PSP officer of the rank of ASP should be deputed to head the traffic police.

This has now become an issue that requires a separate department devoted to enforcing traffic regulations and solving the problems that arise from the increasing number of vehiclular traffic plying in Larkana.

Questions that arise are where does the responsibility for this situation lie and how can it be solved?

The traffic police, however disciplined, cannot work without the cooperation of the public, especially the business community. An orderly traffic system will benefit all and sundry in many ways.
