LARKANA, Feb 11: Opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro has expressed fear that the horse-trading will take place in the Senate elections.

Talking to this correspondent here on Tuesday, the People’s Party Parliamentarians leader alleged that the government had taken to tactics of arm twisting to pressure the elected representatives to vote for “official” candidates.

In this context, he referred to a statement of the federal interior minister that the ruling party would win the Senate elections but it needed some votes.

Asking why the government and others, who mattered, had not taken any notice of the statement, Mr Khuhro said that it spoke of ill intentions of the government.

He said that his party’s talks with the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leadership were continuing and both the parties would arrive at a consensus over the Senate elections.

Replying a question, the PPP leader said that the Sindh government was standing on crutches as its chief minister headed a “fragile” coalition.

Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mahar was unnecessarily entangled in secondary issues and he was ignoring real issues like formation of the provincial finance commission, he said.

He said that instead of boldly addressing vital issues, the provincial government was interfering into affairs of the district governments.

He said that the PPP MPAs would raise the issue of interference in the district government affairs by the Sindh government in coming session of the Sindh Assembly.

Answering another question, Mr Khuhro said that the PPP was prepared to discuss the issue of the Thal canal on the assembly floor.

“When you do not have water in the existing reservoirs, how can water be available for a new canal”, he asked, adding construction of the Thal canal would cast negative impact on Sindh, where no water was being released downstream Kotri.

The situation had resulted into the sea intrusion, leading to devastation of fertile land in the coastal areas of Sindh, he deplored.
