So obviously everyone who spends time on the internet in Pakistan must know by now about our latest feat – we rank number one in porn searches around the world.
Surprised? I’m not sure. I understand that being a Muslim state, there are a lot of restrictions and bans on our society, which may not be a justification, but an explanation of why the levels of frustration are leading the people towards online porn… and animals. No actually, I still don’t get the animals part.
And how much fun Fox and Times of India are having with this report! All of a sudden instead of being good old Pakistan in the news we are being referred to with our full name, ‘The Islamic Republic of Pakistan’ and our alias, ‘The Land of the Pure’. Perfect – respectful and honourable mentions. Sensationalise our love for animals and sex a bit more why don’t you? But the best was ‘Pornistan’, how some copy-editor in the FoxNews’ newsroom must be gloating right now.
Google stated that according to its data, Pakistan ranked number one on various sex-related terms searches. However, Google also stated that: "We do our best to provide accurate data and to provide insights into broad search patterns, but the results for a given query may contain inaccuracies due to data sampling issues, approximations, or incomplete data for the terms entered." Inaccuracies or not… this remains a troubling and embarrassing finding nonetheless!
Obviously stories about terrorism and corruption in our country are becoming monotonous so this one must be a real winner for Fox News. Leaving aside Fox’s big break for a minute – let’s peer into what this says about our governing and monitoring boards. Reflecting upon the choice of animals and varieties of porn will take us away from the point – for that we need a variety of professionals who can analyse why, for instance, camels? Hence, let’s focus on the monitoring and censorship going on in our country.
We are Muslims so of course we should not facilitate and cater to blasphemous content…. But that doesn’t mean we should be accessing Fun in the Jungle in another window either. Where’s the ban on that Pakistan? Hypocrisy has been a regular characteristic here, but after this incident of the Facebook ban, all the authorities involved should really be ashamed of themselves for having double standards. You want a good moral society that isn’t going towards unholy tangents – ban the porn sites! After all, banning Facebook certainly didn't take much time for the officials to do...
Being a country ready to take out demonstrations against anything and everything, doesn’t anyone want to protest the findings on Pakistan’s porn obsession and accessibility? Where are the placards now? Where is the young, angry and righteous youth now? Where are the religious parties now? Is everyone at the internet cafés already…it’s still early in the day... no?

This is indeed very shocking to learn that besides terrorism and other hideaous acts, Pakistan now has another feather in its hat by being number one in pornography. I second writer's thoughts about the double standard of our society and it is really embarassing to see the ignorance of clerics and religious scholars.

In fact during fb fiesta I heard evry1 quoting Prophet's hadith that whosoever dishonors him is to be killed.......I asked them how about thousands of other hadiths to be followed in our everyday life? we are well ahead in showing our love for the Prophet and Islam whenever it comes to violence and doing something that doesn't require fighting with our own nafs (soul), but we are forget quite well what the Prophet and Islam says about honesty, justice, corruption, usury, backbiting, ego, forgiveness, respect for everyone et cetera.

I am not surprised.. desperation and frustration are not the only reasons.. Our media, socialising sites, movies etc. have all contributed to this feat of Pakistan in the international media. Actually, I believe this porn-fever is our 'social termite', it's eating up our society hollow in guise... from kids to the oldies, everyone is actually addicted as a matter of fact to this sin... and all the credit to this desecration of Pakistan goes to us, the Pakistanis, including the government that's having double-standards... . I think the more you clamp down on the society either through religion or government, the more escapes the society will find. I can imagine the young and angry Pakistanis shouting against facebook in the day and 'relieving' themselves on the internet by night...
Why have the pretensions that being Muslim means being holier than everyone else? We all are humans at the end and we all have our follies (which do not change much by which religion we belong to).
Porn is and has been the leading topic on internet searches, so nothing new there.... what is new is the sudden spotlight on Pakistan, especially after the facebook fiasco...
Indeed, the Pakistani courts that were so prompt with facebook should show what they want to do with this finding...

Most of the net-cafes are running on porn movies. Our use of internet is least educated.facebook and all this junk stuff is often used for the wrong purpose of flirting with girls etc.Orkut got spoiled when it beacme a flirting ground for boys and girls.

Hey Sheyma hats off to you. I was thinking to write on this topic ever since the 'facebook ban' was implemented. But since i am not a fluent writer and a little bit busy person so i didn't write anything about it. Though i have several drafts in my laptop on this topic.
Anyways beautifully written indeed! It is such a dilemma in Pakistani society when it comes to social evil everyone stays quiet. We can show anger on blasphemy, we can have rallies in favor of chief justice, we burn American flags but when it comes to basic things which should be right in our society we quiet on such things.
What good that chief justice has brought to a common man??? Out of all domestic cases has the highest percentage. And they are still pending. Woman is still a suppressed entity in our society. So can anyone tell me what good has this man brought to a common man? If you really want to build a society of high moral values just do the basics right. Believe me it is really not a rocket science.
If someone edit a picture of any senator or MNA (which is indeed a shameful act) and put it on any porn website I can bet you these politicians would go mad about it and they will do all to ban porn in Pakistan. But seriously when it comes to save the society from any social evil, not just porn, these politicians have nothing to serve on the table.
No one came out on streets when those Rawalpindi internet cafe clips were out in the market (and we don't know how many of such events were not even recorded). I mean just see the double standards of our society. Really shameful! And when politicians show double standards then people show as much anger as they can. I think we should be treated like this because we are like this and we deserve it.
To be very honest I am really ashamed to see these astonishing stats. May ALLAH help Pakistani youth (amen)

I think you are missing the point. The western countries don't look down at porn the same way Pakistan does. Porn is a legal industry that has emerged into a multi-billion dollar industry. Westerners are expected to look at porn. Pakistanis are not. You see the difference.
There are serious implications this news makes that we need to absorb and then react to. On one hand we call ourselves muslims, and pretend that all of us follow the traditions of Islam to the dot. But reports like these offer us proof that we are nothing but lost. We pretend to be one that we arent. Hence, the disrespect we get from everyone in the world. We are not congruent in our overall makeup. On the exterior we seem to be someone, but on the inside we are much weaker.
I have no problems with people watching porn, as long as they don't abhor the act in public and do it secretly. Grow a spine. If you watch it, you watch it. Admit to it. Dont live your life inside a closet.
It seems in Pakistan everyone has large closets.

I don't understand why everyone is so worked up over this. Pakistan being on top for 'sex' searches in Google Trends was discovered many years ago, has already been discussed to death, and debunked. Yes, debunked.
You see, English is not one of the strong suits of our teenagers. So while we search the Internet for porn using the keyword 'sex' the rest of the world uses the proper word 'porn'.
Please do yourself a favor and look up 'porn' and 'horse porn' in Google trends, and you'll see that western countries top the list.
Trust me, there are perverts everywhere in the world. You just don't have to beat yourself up over every little so-called 'finding' Fox News come up with.

If everyone who is agreeing with this report of fox news is sensible enough then they should have realized that the use of internet in Pakistan is in no way near the use of internet in America. There are 259,561,000 internet users in North America alone with an internet penetration rate of 76.2%. Compare this with 18,500,000 users in Pakistan with an internet penetration rate of <5%. Only 10% of Pakistanis use internet and these 10% of Pakistanis are blamed for having the highest ranking in porn searches. 24.8% of the world internet is used by Americans but still they have to blame us and we agree to it. Dont we have a mind to analyse things our selves with???? Why do we blindly listen to what America has to say??
Guys please be sensible and think about it your self, that is it possible for Pakistan to be on the top of the list for porn searches with the figures i have shown above?? We should try to condem such articles rather than just believing them.

yet again the world is enjoying at our expense. To be honest i still don't buy this. I mean why is that every survey of the west is taken so damn seriously. If lord behold this is true, then yes the question that comes to mind where exactly are we going? and frustration? ha ha. what frustration? I don't even know the estimated figure of number of internet users in the world, it will be in billions, but i am sure that not more then 15% Pakistanis use internet. So the question arises how is it possible that only a small proportion of internet users can achieve highest porn surfing rate in the world. Well the report by its name is unambigous and yet another attempt to make Pakistan and its people feel bad at themselves.
My question from Google, Fox and Times of India is that do you have anything about how many porn websites are Pakistani or being managed by Pakistanis or managed from Pakistan?

A news report carried within Dawn says that Pakistan only has about 8 million Internet users. Do the math, is that 8 million really a representative sample of the Pakistani population? I think not. Much more likely than not, the 8 million consist mostly of upper, and middle class male youth.
As far as banning anything goes, it would be extremely stupid of anyone, especially a journalist or blogger, to demand that pornographic sites be banned - even if that demand is rhetorical. The majority of the nation believes in God. And, if the fear of or the will to obey God is insufficient to stop anyone from viewing pornography or other objectionable material, than what makes Government any more important than God? Pornography and objectionable materials have been around for ages. Pakistan does not need any moral police going around telling people what to do and what not to.

We shouldnt block any website. It is more to do with the moral decline of the society than anything. I am not surprised with the statistics and dont think there is any ploy.... lets not hide again under an argument of a plot. Pakistanis are obssessed with porn.... earlier it was the video stores and now it is much easier.

I think most of responders have missed the point of this blog. In my view the point is: Why people are not protesting that these sites should be banned or filtered as they are affecting moral fabric of our society, at least the educated middle/upper middle class. These sites are more dangerous then the Facebook or Youtube. Such reports or incidents must be analyzed prior to jumping to results and decisions, such as bannig or so. I am not against banning to porn sites in Pakistan but does that resolve the issue? will the porn visitor have access through other means if not online? I guess, Ofcourse they will have access thourhg other means. I guess, we are Muslim (not all of us but majority) by birth but dont have proper education of Islam and dont follow as one should have been. Therefore, nurturing true muslims and our younger generation through proper education is required other than banning porn sites in our beloved country Pakistan.

you should consider these three facts:
1. It is %age terms that Pakistani is number one in searching for porn Not in absolute numbers. i.e, how much % of 'search terms' entered in PK domain is related with the 'porns'.
2. Accessibility: In US, since penetration is so high (76.2%), access to internet is used for almost everything (homework, education, hatting with friends, etc.).
A significant portion of these 'internet users' is from office.. where most entertainment websites (even social networking, job related websites, not to mention porn related website). Parents also use 'safe mode' of internet so that their kids are not exposed to 'mature content'. In a way, there is regulation on porn sites not the ban. Also other sexual material is easily available which curb the obvious curiosity factor.
3 .You know what happens in Pakistan cyber-cafes. right? Cyber cafe/cubicles are mostly used for accessing porn rather than e-mailing. And by the way these cyber-cafes make the 'internet users' in Pakistan more than what is reported on the basis of IP addresses!!
Looking for a conspiracy behind everything is not a solution.
It has been proven time and again that suppression leads to perversion.

Well I'm pleased that some posts on this blog use sensible arguments to prove there is now way 18m internet users can outstrip the search habits of countries like the US where the internet penetration is approaching 10 times that of Pakistan. We don't even have the electricity to power the PCs and routers in the first place. Its nonsense rubbish on a slow news day.
The solution is simple, the PTA just use the same filters that are applied across the Gulf. Our biggest telco PTCL is owned by Etisalat so it can't be that hard? Seems to work fine here in Dubai and keeps my kids safe when they are surfing. People who want porn can always get it somehow and there will always be a market for this trash - it just needs to be kept away from ready access to the wider public. If we restrict access we help ourselves in the long run and if there is a very small market, only a small but unfortunate % will be exploited by these monsters.
Of course, we need a political will and leadership that think of such constructive solutions. They probably won't do it because someone somewhere has some vested interests.....
BTW, why not start the good work by filtering the google ads inviting me to search and chat with girls for free?

These statistics are all skewed and more for just enjoyment and fun. Like Dehli is number 1 for sex related searches from 2004-present. It tells that we no different from the rest of the world. As an Indian I can tell that India is no exception when it comes sexual naivety and frustration. Walk in to any Indian cyber cafe and you will see hoards of boys browsing porn or chatting on web cam with semi clad girls from some other countries. One possible reason that India did not come number 1 in this survey may be due to the reach of internet. There is almost an equal number of female users in India and that might have sobered up India's rankings.

No one can be watching porn in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as we are Muslim and Muslims don't watch bad things.
Even if there are a few, I am sure as good Muslims, they are only visiting these sites to see the filth and depravity of the West and India to protect and warn the other people.
Muslims are pious and that is why we even make sure there is no temptation of immodesty and our women are covered. They cannot be thinking of doing unthinkable things.
We should ban these sites and also ban these news media articles that are negative about Pakistan. We should look towards Saudi for inspiration of having banned all negative influences. Nobody can complain of Saudi men watching porn. I do not buy the argument that our youths are frustrated and hence turn to watching porn. Segregation of sexes may be one reason, but in countries like USA and the west where there is no such segregation, porn thrives. in these countries the thirst for the porn has not been quenched rather enhanced. You should watch their promos for their beach cities like in Miami etc. They attract the locals by promoting literally the opportunity for soft porn experiences. in response the locals pour in to these cities for wild orgies and so on. ( so much for not segregating the sexes!!).

Media wants something or about anything to make news (money)..so they got it...however the answer is not that we should only be embarrassed and think about ourselves OR PTA should only block such sites and other mediums to stop porn. BUT our society and communities have to come forward to stop this PORN obsession from the youth and elderly as well. If our media can play condom, napkins, cigarette and undergarments ads like they are some thing to cheer about in public as Life savers then they can also start such campaigns regarding this obsession.

Which adds to my point that why do we not think and provide a rational before commenting... some interesting perspectives that i got saw above... all contributing to what i said:
1) total internet user for Pakistan as per worldinternetstat.com in 2009 were 17million. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats3.htm#asia.. does that represent the 200million people ???
2) my debate is why do you support such news by posting blogs that might attract some negative marketing... had this been in some other parts of the worlds they would be thousands of blogs denying and challenging such acquisitions.

Watching porn sites is one of the most filthiest thing to do on earth, Allah will punish those who will go against him. The facts should be accepted and should be rectified!, i agree with Shyema totally that Pakistani government should ban the porn sites also, as they did on facbook , I appeal to every good citizen Pakistan to stand against the porn sites before its too late!.

If this report is true, which I doubt is not, shows that our society is at transitional phase. Pakistan are liberal and have freedom to access and see any site, thus they will be in a position to decide their own ways soon.
