KARACHI, April 6: Several records were broken on the opening day of the two-day 13th National Women’s Junior Age Group Swimming Championship at the Karachi Gymkhana here on Saturday.

The teams taking part in the championship, organised by the Sindh Women’s Swimming Association, include Sindh, Army, Punjab, Islamabad, Navy and Wapda.

The events, in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, freestyle relay and medley relay, were held in four age groups — 10 and under, 11 to 12, 13 to 14 and 15 to 16. The championship is being conducted according to the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in the club’s 25m six-lane swimming pool.

“The Women's Junior Age Group is an important annual event and is the nursery from which our young girl swimmers are selected and groomed for international events,” said Veena Masud, secretary of the Pakistan Women’s Swimming Association.

One little swimmer, seven-year-old Emaan Sajid, a class two student of CAS School, though she was competing for Navy — who got the silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle relay — was the youngest competitor this year and showed great promise, too.

Meanwhile, the Sindh team comprising Alisa Motiwala, Zohra Farhan, Laiba Bilwani and Zaha Shaikh broke the record in the girls 10 and under 100 metres freestyle relay by clocking 6:09.39. Navy were second.

Six new individual records were set, three by Bisma Khan of Navy in the age group of 11 and 12 and another three were set by Lianna Swan of Army in the age group of 15 and 16 years.
