QUETTA, Dec 27: The Balochistan University of Information Technology,  Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) has awarded an honorary degree of doctorate of philosophy (PhD) to Syed Fasieh Iqbal, a journalist and former senator, for services in journalism, politics and social work.

He was awarded the degree during the university convocation on Wednesday.

Mr Iqbal, editor-in-chief of the Balochistan Times, has been serving the province for the last couple of decades in different capacities. He is founder of the newspaper, which is the province’s most widely circulated English language daily.

Mr Iqbal is also a member of different social welfare organisations. He once headed the Senate committee on information and tourism.

He is currently the president of Pak-China Friendship Association and the South Asian Editors Council. He has also served as president of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors and All Pakistan Newspapers Society.
