MUZAFFARGARH, Dec 22: An anti-terrorism court judge of Dera Ghazi Khan acquitted on Saturday PPP MNA Jamshed Dasti and 45 others facing charges of torture of doctors at the district headquarters hospital for lack of evidence.

On May 23, 2010, a patient, Khalid Majeed, died at the DHQ hospital and his heirs blamed the doctors for the death. Following the incident, a mob allegedly led by MNA Dasti attacked Dr Amir and Dr Abdul Hameed Ghouri, besides smashing some windowpanes and furniture of the hospital.

The district administration got registered a murder case against the two doctors with city police station on May 23.

On the next day (May 24), a mob again reached the hospital and soon Mr Dasti also arrived there.

At the hospital, doctors were already protesting against district administration for getting a murder case registered against two of their colleagues.

The MNA exchanged hot words with doctors and after he left the hospital, the mob attacked the medics. Four doctors and some paramedics were injured in the attack.

Mr Dasti claimed he had gone to the hospital for resolving the matter and that the attack occurred after he left the place.

A case under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) was registered against MNA Dasti and 45 other nominated accused and 150 unidentified people. It was being heard by Anti Terrorism Court, Dera Ghazi Khan, on the order of the Lahore High Court after its chief justice took a sou motu notice of the incident.

The family of the deceased, Khalid Majeed, had forgiven the two doctors and withdrew the murder case registered against them.
