VATICAN CITY: French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran on Saturday went to the defence of the young Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy, stressing that she “cannot read or write.”
Interviewed on Radio Vatican, Tauran, who is in charge of interfaith dialogue in the Vatican, said “that before asserting a sacred text has been the object of scorn, it is worth checking the facts.”
Rimsha, aged 11 to 16 according to different reports, is accused of burning pages from a children's religious instruction book inscribed with verses from the Quran. She was arrested and remanded in custody last Thursday.
But Tauran said that Rimsha “is a girl who cannot read or write and collects garbage to live on and picked up the fragments of the book which was in the middle of the rubbish. The more serious and tense the situation, the more necessary it is to have dialogue,” added the cardinal, who was the late pope John Paul II's foreign minister.
He also told the daily Il Sussidiario, that he believed it “impossible in the light of the facts that the girl had tried to express her scorn for the sacred book of Islam.”
The youngster reportedly has Down's Syndrome and her arrest has prompted outrage from rights groups and concern from Western governments.
Rights groups say the legislation is often abused to settle personal vendettas.
Rishma had been due to appear in court on Saturday but police and her lawyer said Friday that the hearing had been put back to August 31.

How foolish this is this poor girl should be freed and looked after i read somewhere that she has MH problems, where did she get hold of this book in the first place if according to the papers it was found in the rubbish why is she being punished. Being head of Pakistan Judiciary Chief Justice must intervene by using his suo-moto powers and get this girl out of the jail.
This incident is an embarrassment for Pakistan.

Mr. Buhtani - you have a valid point. In my view - it should not be amount to Blasphemy and after your words of sorry - the subject matter be closed - there and then.
But unfortunately - a mix of people with very low understanding of LIFE and RELIGION - creates something which is happening in Pakistan. It is interesting that these people BREAK their religion (by not doing that Quran says them to do) every day and moment of their life and do not consider it as Blasphemy - since they themselves are involved in it or their loved ones. Since this incident involves - 'someone else' - especially someone from other religion - they willl make a good point out of it and wish to exploit a very abused law (or will take the law into their own hands)

Some 40 or so years ago I saw a line written somewhere and could not read it. With some effort I copied it as accurately as I could on a notebook and took it to the imam of a local mosque. He was clearly well versed in that language, read it at once, and translated it into Urdu for me. He also said that it was an ayat in Arabic from the Quran and therefore it was to be honoured as much as the Quran itself. I took that seriously and have kept that notebook carefully in my collection. When I left he also gave me a small book in Arabic, which too I have kept carefully as part of my collection. I do not read Arabic. I am not a Muslim. If the imam had not told me that the line that I had copied was to be honoured like the Quran, I might not have kept the notebook carefully: nothing else was important in that notebook. On other note, I will advice, that it's better to have a bit idea about other religion. which are present in locality/city/country.. so that one can always take care about them, and never do blasphemy knowingly or unknowingly.!!!

firstly this is indeed for me a case of over extension in the name of protecting islamic text/ verse, which rightly should be honoured and respected, but not at the cost of making an example out of a child?
secondly it does in a way show the LACK of tolerance, intelligence and clarity to show that islam is a peaceful and TOLERANT and respectful of other faiths?
thirdly the individual circumstances around the case quite clearly point to local zealots getting carried away and being blind to the obvious pointers that the young girl is a victim and not a perpetrator.
So will the authorities show a much needed ability to carry out righteous and wise decision or turn it into a farce!

We are in dire straights. The deep rooted religious extremism has invaded our society and there is no remedy in sight. The secular or liberal politicians and the hyper active judiciary with its new found freedom are averse to addressing this issue for fear for their lives. Interestingly the supreme court is busy defining the term vulgarity / obscenity of TV programmes. Well written Iqbal. Long time back I was offering my Friday prayers in KaracHi where the Mullah delivering the Khutba declared that people who teach their kids to say " bye bye" are Kafirs. I had a very difficult time completing my prayers that day and kept on thinking that when did God almighty appoint this person his messenger to decide our fate? I never went back to that mosque again.

What I want to know is, who is to blame??? the people who caught her and assaulted her OR the authorities who took her and locked her in the same cell as other adult prisoners. Is she safe in there???
Our problem is, we are too consumed about what others are doing instead of educating ourselves.
We need to to learn to be patient and investigate more what Islam says about being good humans.
It is time to introduce a subject in our elementary education system about understanding people. The biggest difference between us as a nation and people from other countries is understanding the issue first before reacting.

Dr. V.C Bhutani, the naswer is simply NO!!! Common sense tells us that if you cannot read and undertsand a language,it means nothing to you. Therefore, you are not doing anything to scorn any religon. Allah (God) is not so vain . He is most foriving,most understanding, most compassionate. Unlike him the so called Muslsim Ulemas of today are "jahil" uneducated. Many of them recite the Quran without even understanding it!!! It is a uselss peice of book if you cannot understand and follow it. In many Muslims homes you will see the Quran kept high in a safe place. It is obvious they do not even bother reading it or understanding it. This is why all the artifical defence of the religon. Islam needs no defence of these Jahil Mullahs. Allah is not dependednt on these folks. The Quran states very clearly that a time will come when people will recite the Quran beautifully but will have no undertsnading of the message. Such people have a special punishment from Allah. So ,please do not worry about the note book that it contains a important ayaat. Pakistan is not a true Islamic country until we get rid of all Mullahs and take over the mosques. Quran is the guiding light and contains all the guidance we need to live our lives according to Allah's will. There is nowhere in Quran to punish people for desecrating Quran or having a different religion or opinion. Allah is the judge for - we are not!

I dont think that she will be punished if facts discussed above are correct. It is also noteworthy that she is under arrest due to a violation of a law. Had she been arrested without existance of any such law there would have been same hue and cry. Hence, now all those speaking in her favour are not talking about rule of law and respect of religion and beliefs.

Most of the replies reveal acceptance of the fact that minorities are suffering and a thought of changing this sad oft repeated scenario seems to be born in the hearts and minds of many as sensed in the replies. This to me is a positive out of this sad, chaotic state of affairs. Rev. you are a pious man and the prayers of the righteous can accomplish much. Do not cease to pray, pray on as prayers change hearts and circumstances too.

including this girl,99.9 pakistanis do not understand arabic and therefore do not know what is written in the Quran or what are the meaning of the verses recited during the Namaz which is offered 5 times a day. If we understood the Quran or the namaz, we wouldnt be fanatics and the mullahs would loose their employment

I fail to understand that it is no where written in Holy Quran that if it is burnt or shown disrespect then the perpetrator should be burnt or killed so why all this fuss. Article 265 A B & C is a man made law and not a divine law. There are many cases in the history where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was insulted but He showed mercy so why his followers are killing in His name. This law either should go or rewritten according to international standards and requirements.
