KARACHI: Vast areas of Karachi plunged into darkness on after several transmission feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) tripped on Saturday night, DawnNews reported.

The breakdown affected Karachi’s Garden, Jacob Lines, Korangi, DHA, Clifton, Lyari, Federal B area, Jehangir Road, Gulshan-i-Jamal, West Wharf, Tariq road and other areas.

According to a KESC spokesperson the suspension of electric supply to Karachi resulted due to the tripping of two 220 KV and three 132 KV transmission lines and 22 of the city’s 64 grid stations had been affected by the suspension.

The spokesman added that KESC staff was busy making repair efforts and so far faults on ten of the affected grid stations had been repaired.

Moreover woes of Karachi’s residents were compounded when one of Dhabeji pumping station’s  72-inch pipelines supplying water to the city burst.

Managing Director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said that  the pipeline burst due to the frequent electricity outages and as a result scarcity of water is feared in many of the affected areas.

The water board added that water supply would be resumed through an alternate pipeline once electricity is restored.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan taking notice of the electricity and water situation in the city contacted the KESC and KWSB administration directing them to ensure the supply of basic services to the city residents.
