This is with reference to Cyril Almeida’s column ‘Judging the court’ (July 15). It is a double-barelled article in a way that on one hand it has covertly supported the President Asif Ali Zardari, and on the other hand, it has openly criticised the Supreme Court order for the letter to the Swiss authorities.

As a regular reader of Dawn, I have felt that slowly and gradually all blazing guns are changing direction towards the Supreme Court.

There is a certain disposition and tone in which print and electronic media altogether have started to raise questions about the degree of power enjoyed by the apex courts.

The recent comments by the chief justice regarding the supremacy of the Supreme court over the parliament has added fuel to the fire to such an extent that it even compelled the senior leaders of the PML (N), the flag-holder of independent and free judiciary to advise their party chief to take a balanced approach amid rising tension and confrontation between the Supreme Court and the PPP-led government.

This is a heavy blow to judiciary. This is a time for judiciary to realise the mood of changing tides and exercise some restraint since respected judges are there to provide justice, not to make headlines and deliver speeches.
