ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Wednesday there were no charges of corruption against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, but only allegations.

He said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had always faced allegations and presented itself for accountability.

Speaking to a private TV news channel, he said that in past allegations were also levelled against many politicians, army personnel and even on judiciary.

He said the newly elected prime minister was the choice of Benazir Bhutto as she had reposed trust in Ashraf by making him the secretary general of the party during 2008 elections.

He said Ashraf was part of the PPP since long and the party had appointed a worker as prime minister of the country.

“The leadership of other political parties could never think of nominating someone else for the prime minister's post,” he added.

Replying to a question, Kaira said it was party's decision that he (Kaira) submitted his nomination papers for the slot, but as Ashraf was senior to him, that was why he (Raja) was given preference.

Replying to another question, he said giving date to overcome loadshedding problem was not the judgment of Raja Pervez Ashraf, but of his team, which had provided him wrong data.

The newly elected prime minister will also work in accordance with the constitution of the country, he said.

The information minister said there was no confrontation between the government and the judiciary, adding, the PPP had always given sacrifices for the protection and stability of the institutions.
