LARKANA, June 6: A polio case has been detected in Larkana which remained a polio-free district for eight years.

The District Health Officer of Larkana, Dr Abdul Fatah Bughio, confirmed the case to Dawn on Wednesday.

He said an 18-month-old boy, Riaz Ahmed, son of Muhammed Hassan Jgairani, a resident of village Razi Pitafi in Pir Bakhsh Bhutto union council of Larkana, was reported to his office on May 21.

On May 28, he said, stool samples of the boy were sent to the Institute of Medical Sciences, which confirmed on Wednesday to the district health office that it was a polio case.

The DHO said the boy had been administered 10 doses of anti-polio vaccine, adding that three doses were enough to protect a child from the polio disease.

The deputy commissioner of Larkana, Abdul Aleem Lashari, has convened an urgent meeting of the health and other departments concerned to discuss the situation.
