THE Pakistan Navy has created an extremely serious situation by erecting a huge wall in the Indus River bed near historical Lansdowne Bridge in Sukkur.The purpose of encroachment is believed to be development of a park.

According to the irrigation department, the river has Bakkar Island and Saadh Belo just after the Landslide Bridge and thus the river bed turns narrow at that point. After constructing a wall the river will change its direction from the point of the wall into two streams creating a huge pressure on both sides of river having dykes, on the one hand, and the Bunder Wall, on the other.

Therefore, such a project can create a risk for Sukkur barrage.

The Tehsil Municipal Administration, Rohri, has termed the project unlawful while the chief engineer, irrigation department, Sukkurbarrage,haslodged a complaint with the Sindh government and warned about the impending disaster in monsoon season.

Unfortunately, so far all requests have been ignored and work on the illegal park continues in full swing.

I request the chief minister of Sindh to ask the naval authorities to stop work on this illegal project forthwith so Sukur barrage, the lifeline of Sindh agriculture, can be saved from a possible disaster.
