KARACHI, Jan 10: The remains of a man believed to be a civilian employee of Pakistan Navy and kidnapped about a year ago in Lyari were found in Muhammadi Colony, better known as Machhar Colony, on Tuesday.

Police said the skeleton, wrapped in a sheet of cloth, was found on a vacant plot in the settlement off Mauripur Road.

A duty officer at the Kalri police station said that a search for the victim was carried out by the naval police. Local police were assisting them in legal formalities, he added.

Following the recovery of the remains, the clothes of the victim were shown to the family, who recognised them, the local police said.

It is being believed that the remains found are that of Abdul Rauf, a civilian employee of Pakistan Navy.

He was kidnapped on Feb 19, 2011 within the remit of the Kalri police station. He lived in the PN flats opposite Mohammadi Colony, police said.

Subsequently, the family had lodged an FIR (68/2010) under Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Kalri police station on the complaint of Hafiz Umar, the victim’s son.

The family had also reported the matter to the PN authorities. Police said the Naval Police carried out most of the investigations, which resulted in the detection of the remains.

However, it was not clear on whose information the Naval Police found the remains on the plot.

The remains were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for legal formalities, where medico-legal officer Dr Lala Mubarak said a medical board headed by Police Surgeon Dr Hamid Parhiar would hold a meeting on Wednesday and they would obtain DNA samples from the remains and family members which would be sent for an analysis.

No official from the PN was available to provide further information about the matter.
