KOHAT, Nov 24: Inspector general Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Major General Nadir Zeb on Thursday said terrorist attacks in the sensitive district of Hangu during Muharram couldn’t be ruled out despite stringent security checks.

He said this here during a meeting on security arrangements for Muharram in Hangu.

Commissioner Kohat Division Sahibzada Mohammad Anees, deputy inspector general of police Kohat region Masood Afridi, political agent of Kurram Agency Shahabullah Shah, political agent of Orakzai Agency Khushal Khan, district coordination officer Hangu Abdul Kamal, district police officer Hangu Abdur Rasheed Khan and other civil and military officials attended the meeting in which the IG was given separate briefings on security situation and counterterrorism measures.

Maj-Gen Nadir directed security forces and law-enforcement agencies to strictly enforce Section 144 and carry out search operations for the arrest of militants and suspects and said nobody would be allowed to harm peaceful environment in the district during the month.

He said keeping in view the imminent security threat, additional force of police and Frontier Constabulary had been deployed in Hangu and the army had been put on a standby.

“We have overcome the poor law and order situation in Hangu and restored peace in its various parts but despite tight security arrangements, the imminent threat of a terrorism incident during Muharram can’t be ruled out completely,” he said.Meanwhile, the regional administration have arranged a joint peace jirga of elders from Shia and Sunni sects on Muharram security, at the Police Club, Kohat today (Friday).

LAKKI SECURITY: District coordination officer Nisar Ahmad on Thursday chaired a meeting at his office in Lakki Marwat to discuss security measures for Muharram, especially on Ashura.

Participants examined security checks for mourning processions and facilities for mourners, and decided that all points leading to procession routes would be sealed.

The DCO expressed annoyance at the absence of health department officials and issued directions for them to show up in the next meeting.

He also directed the department to ensure availability of ambulances, doctors and paramedics to mourners and ordered the tehsil municipal administration to ensure cleanliness and installation of streetlights on the procession routes.
