Wasa suspends tanker service

RAWALPINDI, Nov 14: Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) on Monday suspended its water tanker service for five locations on the pretext of decreasing demand in winter though the residents still complain about receiving water in trickles.

Wasa asked its employees deputed at the five locations to surrender the tankers and supporting staff to the headquarters. The localities where the tanker service has been closed are: Liaquat Bagh, Khayaban-i-Sir Syed, Commercial Market, Shamsabad and Kali Tanki.

According to Wasa spokesman, the decision would reduce unnecessary expenditure and help the agency relocate its surplus employees and utilise their services in other sectors.

On the other hand, several localities in the city are still in grip of water shortage with the residents complaining that their water taps remained dry and they had to call Wasa offices for water tankers.

“I need a tanker costing Rs375 after a fortnight as water supply from the tubewell is interrupted due to power outages. The decision to close the tanker service is unjustified and should be withdrawn,” said Raees Kiani, a resident of Dhoke Kashmirian, while talking to Dawn.— Our Reporter

Seven nabbed

ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: The capital police on Monday arrested seven outlaws and recovered liquor, narcotics and weapons along with looted items from them.

A police spokesman said that the Bhara Kahu police arrested three alleged thieves and recovered looted items worth hundreds of thousands of rupees from them.

Likewise, the Nilore police also arrested an alleged thief and recovered two stolen mobiles, cash and a pistol along with other valuables from him.

Similarly, the Shalimar police arrested an alleged bootlegger after a recovery of 13 bottles of wine and one gallon of liquor from him.

The Koral police also arrested two drug peddlers and recovered heroin weighing 235grams from him. Separate cases were registered against them and investigation was in progress. — Staff Reporter

Obituary

ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: All Pakistan Akhbar Farosh Federation President Mohammad Shafi died on Monday after protracted illness. He was 65.

He was survived by wife, four sons and three daughters, says a press release. He was laid to rest at Chak Shahzad graveyard. His funeral was attended by his relatives, friends and office-bearers of the federation.

Meanwhile, the office-bearers of the Federation in a statement paid tributes to Mohammad Shafi. They prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss.
