KHAIRPUR, Nov 10: Replacement of wide-ranged `Medium Wave’ MW radio transmissions with the limited-ranged FM forced the people of the city to observe a complete shutter down strike on Thursday.

The strike call was given by the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) and supported by the Muttahida Mazdoor Federation (MMF) and the PML-N workers.

Protesters also held a demonstration at Punj Gulla Chowk. JSQM district President Amjad Mahesar, MMF leader Feroze Phulpoto and PML-N’s district general secretary Ghulam Hyder Phulpoto said discontinuation of MW transmissions was a ploy to derailing the democracy because former premier Z.A. Bhutto initiated the service in Khairpur which the Sindh’s Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah consolidated by inaugurating high-powered transmissions.

They questioned the rationale behind replacing the wide-ranged transmissions of MW with the limited-ranged FM radio transmission.

They feared the property of Radio Pakistan may be given to land mafia on lease as they were after this invaluable land.

Leaders regretted the PPP leaders for talking big before assuming the power but once in it, they forgot to fulfil the promise of upgrading the status of this radio station. They vowed to continue their protest till the MW transmissions were not restored.

BLACK DAY: The employees of Shah Abdul Latif University observed `black day’ on Thursday to press for the acceptance of their demands.

A large number of employees belonging to SALU Employees Welfare Association marched across the university campus. They said that they had started their protest before Eid which would continue till a formal order for the acceptance of their demands was not issued.

They accused the administration of failing to control alleged corruption in the university.
