KARACHI: Pakistan rounded off their engagements in Snooker World Cup by registering a fine 3-2 victory over Egypt in the last group ‘A’ match at Bangkok Convention Centre on Friday.
However, despite the win, Pakistan failed to qualify for the last-eight, finishing third in the group behind Wales and Republic of Ireland.
According to the results, Pakistan finished with two wins and as many defeats to finish ahead of Germany and Egypt in the five-team group. The Germans and Egyptians have lost three of their four matches apiece.
At the time of filing this report, six of the eight teams have qualified for the knockout quarter-finals. The qualifiers include Wales and Republic of Ireland (group ‘A’), Australia (group ‘B’), England and Northern Ireland (group ‘C’), and Scotland (group ‘D’).
Pakistan recovered from 1-2 down to post nail-biting 3-2 victory over Egyptians to remain in contention for securing second spot in the group.
Top seed Wales won all the four games to emerge group champions.
National champion Shahid Aftab lost the opener to Wael Talat while former Asian No 2 Mohammad Sajjad restored parity by getting the better of Yaser Elsherbiny.
Pakistan again landed in hot waters when the duo of Shahid and Sajjad tasted defeat at the hands of Wael Talat and Yaser Elsherbiny in the doubles to trail 1-2.
However, the Pakistani pair got their act together claiming the remaining two singles to end on winning note. Sajjad overcame Wael Talat while Shahid defeated Yaser Elsherbiny.
The quarter-finals will be played on Saturday while curtain fall on the event on Sunday with semi-finals and final on card.
