PESHAWAR, June 28: A former union council naib Nazim was shot dead and two others were wounded in an attack by unidentified gunmen within the limits of Paharipura police station here on Tuesday.

A police official said that Shaukat Hayat, ex-naib nazim of Chughalpura UC was on way to attend a relative’s funeral along with his brother Nasir Hayat and friend Ismail Khan in a car when two armed men riding a motorbike attacked them in Paharipura.

The three sustained serious bullet injuries and were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital. The former naib nazim died while on way to the hospital while the condition of the rest two was stated to be serious.

“The injured persons are avoiding nominating anyone in the FIR and saying that they had no enmity,” the official quoted them as saying. He said that it would be premature to say who was behind the attack, however, efforts were being made to trace the motorcyclists.

He said that it was a targeted killing and the attackers disappeared immediately after the incident. A murder case, he said, had been registered against unidentified attackers.
