ISLAMABAD, June 24: Police have registered a case on Friday against two callers impersonating the Supreme Court (SC) registrar and asking on telephone a judicial magistrate to quash three cases against an under trial prisoner (UTP).

Judicial Magistrate Rai Liquat Ali Kharal told police that Superintendent of Session Court Mr Qamar informed him that the SC registrar has given a cellphone number with the direction to call on it.

When the magistrate made the call, the receiver inquired about the prisoner and the status of cases against him. The UTP, arrested in 2008 by Industrial Area police, is facing three cases regarding cheques' dishonour.

The call's receiver asked the magistrate to quash the cases. The demand raised suspicion.

When SC Registrar Fakir Hussain was contacted through the District and Sessions Judge, Islamabad, he denied making any call to the superintendent or asking to quash the cases.

Mr Kharal directed the police to take action against the two callers – the man impersonating the SC registrar and the other who inquired about the cases against the UTP.

Though the case has been registered on charges of PPC 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) and 15-D Telegraph Act, no arrests have been made.
