SUKKUR, June 7: Joint efforts by police and an NGO-- Human Right Forum — foiled an attempt to sell out a minor girl for marriage to a 50-year old man in a Ghotki village on Tuesday.

According to information provided by the Forum, the Khanpur Mahar police on Tuesday conducted a raid in Sardar Garh village and took into custody Naseema and her father Khan Mohammad Mahar and produced them in the court.

Naseema's family lives in Khanpur Mahar and she had been brought to the village to solemnise her Nikkah with her buyer.

In their statements before the court Naseema and her mother Shamshad said that Khan Mohammad had received an amount of Rs370,000 from Achar Mahar in this regard.

Khan Mohammad also confessed of selling the girl to Achar Mahar.

The court ordered to hand over the girl to her uncle Saif Ali (brother of Shamshad).

Later, talking to the reporters Ms Shamshad said that Nikkah of Naseema with Achar Mahar was to be solemnised on Tuesday but police arrested her husband an hour before the ceremony.

She said that her sons — Ghulam Mustafa and Jan Mohammad — had been opposing sale of their sister.

She said that earlier her husband had sold her another daughter Sakina to one Mehboob.
