MARDAN, April 28: A college student was killed and his two classmates received critical bullet injuries when police deployed at Sawldher checkpost opened fire on their motorcycle after the former ignored signal to stop here on Thursday, police and eyewitnesses said. Residents of Sawldher village told this correspondent that two first-year students, Ataullah and Abbas of the Tanbolak locality, were going to drop their classmate Hamid at his home in Sawaldher area after taking their paper in the government postgraduate college, Mardan.

The police opened fire on the three students riding on a motorcycle after they did not stop at the checkpost. As a result, all the three received critical bullet injuries and Ataullah died on way to hospital while Hamid and Abbas were referred to Peshawar hospital in critical condition.

Later, villagers and relatives placed Ataullah's body on main G.T. Road near Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti's home and blocked the road. They chanted slogans against the police and demanded of the chief minister to take strict action against the checkpost staff within 24 hours. — Correspondent
