SUKKUR, Feb 3: The district administration, on the directives of Sindh government, began anti-encroachment drive on a massive scale in different areas of Sukkur on Thursday.

Illegally-constructed houses and shops built on the embankments of off-taking canals of Sukkur Barrage were removed with the help of heavy machinery.

Deputy District Officer Revenue taluka new Sukkur Muhammad Aijaz Raza led the drive by instructing his team to demolish illegally-constructed shops on footpaths and roadside on the Military RoadLater, the team was led to City Bypass, Rice Canal, Khirthar Canal and Dadu Canal embankments from where they removed katcha and pacca houses, shops and small industries.

However, the team faced some resistance as people staged a demonstration and a sit-in to halt anti-encroachment drive but the escorting police party resorted to baton-charge which eventually helped in dispersing the crowd.

DDO Aijaz Raza told journalists that people were facing problems due illegal occupation while leading to traffic jams on daily basis.

First phase of the drive would remove encroachment from the Military Road, City Bypass and from protective bunds of canals, while city areas would be targeted in second phase, he said.

He said encroachers should voluntarily vacate government lands because admi- nistration would not be respon-sible for the damages occurring during removal of encroachments through heavy machinery.
