CHITRAL, Sept 5: Tehsil Nazim of Chitral Amir, Khan Mir, has said the bureaucracy is trying to undermine the newly-established system of local government.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, he said the new  system of local government would help in encouraging the establishment of local government and said it was best suited to the needs of the people.

He said that the government was earnest to make the system a success. Regarding the status of the local government after the general elections, he opined that there would be a better working relationship between the MPs and the Nazismeen as the authorities had been defined and  one supplement  the other in many ways.

The tehsil municipal administration was facing severe financial constraints and we are not in a position to pay the salaries our establishment, he told.

Regarding the imposition of local taxes, he said, due to the poverty such proposals could not be considered at present although it was all-inevitable.

About the main problems of the tehsil, he said potable water and sanitation in the urban areas and the lack of schooling facilities for girls in the rural areas were the most striking problems, which needed immediate redressal.

He expressed his concern that due to ban on appointments in the education department, most of the schools were being run without proper staff.

BOYCOTT: The teachers association has decided to boycott the polling duties in the forthcoming general elections if their demands were not accepted by the end of the month.

In an emergency meeting of the association on Wednesday, it was decided that the teachers would not lend support to the government in the conduct of the elections if they were not paid their dues for their duties in the compilation of voters list.
