KOHAT, Aug 17: A former councillor was killed by unidentified men in Jarwanda area, while another man died in a road accident in Kohat on Tuesday.

According to police, Daulat Khan was on his way to bazaar when the unknown men opened fire on him. He died on the spot.

City police registered a murder case against the unknown killers and started investigation.

In the second incident, Siraj was killed and seven others were injured when a pickup, B-5906, on the way from Lachi Town to Kohat smashed into a tree after its driver lost its control. The injured were shifted to the Kohat Development Authority (KDA) hospital.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have foiled an attempt to smuggle arms and ammunition from tribal area of Darra Adam Khel and seized five pistols and hundreds of cartridges from a car, MR-373, near toll plaza on the Indus Highway. FAMILIES EXPELLED:

Military authorities ordered expulsion of four Christian families, whose members were allegedly involved in committing thefts in the houses of armymen, from Cantonment area on Tuesday.

The four-member gang was busted by the army intelligence and police in a joint operation after receiving several complaints of thefts since the beginning of August.

The operation came after unknown men barged into the house of military policeman and took away cash and mobile phones. According the police, the gang was led by a car painter, Sheraz.

The Saddar police also claimed to have recovered Rs45,000 and mobile phones from the house of Mr Sheraz. He also confessed to committing thefts in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the police said.

According the police, the gang's members used to enter into the houses on the pretext of white-washing and then prepared plans to carry out thefts and robberies.

The other members were identified as Adnan, Sunni and Tanveer who were presented in the court of judicial magistrate II, who sent them to prison.

STRIKE ENDS: City butchers are back in the markets after a week-long strike over tussle with the administration at the prices of meat.

The administration, which also opened meat fair price shops to force the butchers to accept the government rates of beef at Rs170 per kg and mutton at Rs300 per kg, succumbed to public pressure due to holy month of Ramazan.

The butchers were found selling mutton at Rs400 per kg and beef from Rs180 to Rs220 per kg, violating the official prices.
