KARACHI, Jan 29 Mubbashir Afridi fought courageously when he overcame Saif Noor Sumar in straight sets to annex men's singles crown in the SSB Development Series Tennis championship at the City Sports Complex on Friday.

Mubbashir came under stiff opposition in the second set of the final but remained firm and won on a tie-breaker 7-6 (4). Earlier, he had won the opener 6-4.

The left-hander Saif had some consolation as he teamed up with Saqib Hussain to land the men's doubles title earlier in the day. The pair beat M. A. Saeed and M. Naseem 6-1, 6-4.

The juniors' under-17 doubles title went to Nameer Shamsi who together with Basit Gabol edged Talha Zubair and Sanwal Memon 6-2, 6-4 in the final on Thursday evening.

Nameer has ended the event with a double crown as he had pocketed the juniors' under-17 singles title the other day.

Another player to equal his feat was young Emad Najam who swept boys' under-13 singles and doubles. His partner in the doubles was Azher A. Qadir.

Eulogising the services of Sindh Tennis Association (STA) for the uplift of game, Secretary Sports Sindh, Shoaib Siddiqui, who graced the occasion, assured to make the event an annual feature.

He called upon the organisers to stage a similar event in the interior of Sindh in collaboration with his department.
