GILGIT The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has declared Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate Aftab Haider successful from LA-3, Gilgit-III constituency.
 
The result was announced after re-polling in four stations. Returning Officer Raja Minhaj said here on Wednesday that Mr Haider got 6,006 votes and was declared successful.

Asad Zamin, district magistrate and election commissioner, said that 28 people were arrested 'who were creating law and order crisis during the polling'.

Police also recovered weapons from the workers of a political party and cases were registered against the accused.

US-returned independent candidate Mehboob Hussain Obama was arrested. The candidates of MQM and PML-Q were also taken into custody after a protest in Danyore, senior police officials said.

SP Gilgit Ali Sher said that unidentified persons shot at and injured one person. Police baton charged and resorted to fire teargas shells to disperse a public gathering which was being turned into a mob.

He said weapons were recovered from some people and cases were registered. He said that some protestors damaged police vehicles and blocked roads to stop people from going to the polling stations.

Huge contingents of police, Punjab Rangers and other paramilitary forces were deployed in Danyore which took strict security measures around the polling stations.

MQM candidate Hadi Hussain alleged that massive rigging took place during polling. He said that they would resist anti-democratic actions in the region. The MQM leader said that one of their workers, Ishaq, was injured.

Meanwhile, residents of Danyore complained that teargas caused problems to senior citizens and children in the once peaceful area.
