ISLAMABAD, Nov 13 Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed top federal health officials to investigate the causes of Huma Akram's death, Dawn has learnt on authority.
Huma, 42, the wife of former Pakistan captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram, had died at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India, on Oct 25. She was admitted at the Indian hospital after developing complications in an air ambulance on her way to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore from Pakistan.
“Wasim Akram has approached the prime minister and requested the government to help and investigate the circumstances which led to his wife's death,” a top official of the federal government said on Friday.
The official on condition of anonymity said, “Former captain has made a complaint to the federal government and on the directives of the premier, the federal health ministry has formed a three-member committee comprising top medical professionals who will probe the causes of Huma Akram's death.”
Wasim had earlier conveyed his complaint to a federal minister that he was neither happy nor satisfied with the medical care or attention provided to his wife by doctors in Lahore.
The official said “The federal health investigators have also been provided with a detailed eight-page medical report of the late Huma.
“The report also carries a death certificate issued by the Apollo Hospital along with Huma's medical history.”
Asked to comment over the powers of the investigative team, the official said, “This committee will probe and submit the report to the federal government.”
Answering a question, he said, “It's better not to throw assumptions over the death of Huma. Everyone should refrain from highlighting the issue more because it will hurt the family of Wasim.”
“The enquiry team will contact Wasim and look into the records with the hospitals providing her treatment. It will submit its findings within 10 days,” the official added.
