SUKKUR, April 16: The Maher tribesman who was kidnapped by the Shabbir Maher group from a village near Pano Aqil on Monday was killed on Tuesday.

The Shabbir Maher group shot and killed Shamman Maher and threw his body in front of the houses belonging to their rivals, the Gulzar Maher group.

The Gulzar Maher group became infuriated after Shamman’s death. Both the groups started firing on one another on Tuesday morning also as a result of which several tribesmen from both the groups were injured.

No arrest had been reported till the filing of this report.

REFERENDUM: The Sindh governor, Mohammedmian Soomro claimed that the purpose of holding referendum was to maintain continuity of the process of the newly-introduced Local Council System and the reforms announced by President Pervez Musharraf in various sectors “for bringing about a tangible change in the society”.

He said this while addressing district, Taluka, and union council Nazims/Naib Nazims and Councillors at the Public School auditorium, Sukkur, on Tuesday.

He asked the Nazims to supplement government efforts by exercising their vote in favour of the president during the referendum “in the interest of giving continuity to the government reforms”.

He advised the growers to adopt modern methods of agriculture. He said that the government would provide subsidy for the lining of watercourse.

He asked government officials to pay attention to the problems of elected representatives and councillors and ensure solving them on a priority basis.
