MARDAN, Oct 25: Chairman of Citizen Action Committee, Izzat Mohammad Khaplwak, has said that the Aurat Foundation is struggling for the rights of women and claimed that because of its efforts , women have been given 33 per cent representation in assemblies, district councils, Tehsil councils and union councils in the country.
Addressing a press conference at the Mardan Press Club, Mr Khaplwak said that along with achieving representations in various institutions, the Citizen Action Committee, the Aurat Foundation and the District Resource Centre were also raising voice for ending torture against women and particularly against the tradition of Swara.
He said that the Aurat Foundation, the Citizen Action Committee and the District Resource Centre participated in a protest rally in Islamabad last week against honour killings.
Mr Khaplwak claimed that they were raising voice against Swara particularly in Mardan 'because this curse is widespread in this area'.
The chairman of Citizen Action Committee praised the MMA government for bringing in legislation to protect women from torture.
WARNING: People of Katlang have vowed to thwart any efforts made to move the 132 KV grid station from the area.
This resolve was made during a meeting held at the Hujra of Fazal Raziq Khan at Mashal Khan Village which was attended by a large number of people of Katlang.
The protestors said that the grid station was approved through the efforts of the people of the area by the then minister for water and power, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherapo.
Any attempt to move the grid station from Katlang would have very serious consequences, they warned.
They claimed that a feudal and a police officer had earlier got a stay against the grid station because it was to occupy some land owned by the feudal.
They said they were ready to compensate the feudal for the land and urged him not to block the construction of the tower.
