SUKKUR, Oct 21: A team formed by the Sindh chief minister visited the Sukkur Barrage on Thursday and reviewed the progress of repair work of the barrage and the Dadu Canal.
The team comprised former irrigation secretary Muzzamil Qureshi, former secretary Idress Rajput, former irrigation chief engineer Sardar Ahmad Mughal and additional irrigation secretary Khadim Ali Memon.
The team after inspection observed that if the work of filing two ditches of 12 and eight feet in the Dadu Canal was not carried out immediately, it could prove dangerous.
They maintained that there were four ditches in the canal, two of which needed immediate repairing and the remaining two could not be repaired without closure of the canal.
The team will submit its report to the chief minister on Friday.
WATER SHORTAGE: Hundreds of people, including women and children, held a protest demonstration, outside the press club here on Wednesday against officials of the Sukkur Taluka Municipal Council for not ensuring water supply to people.
Protest demonstrations were also held in New Goth and in front of the Taluka Municipal Council.
Raising slogans against the taluka nazim and other officials of the taluka council, the protestors said Bihar Colony, Military Road, New Pind and New Goth areas were without water since last Thursday.
They said several houses in New Pind and Bihar Colony were inundated by water after a 12-diameter water pipeline burst. They said the taluka council had failed to repair the pipeline due to which thousands of people were facing hardships.
Meanwhile, taluka council officials and hydrant operators are allegedly overcharging on water tankers.
TWO KILLED: Two persons were killed in an armed clash between two groups of the Dahar tribe in Hafiz Suleman Dahar village, five kilometres off Daharki, on Wednesday morning.
Those killed were identified as Syed Mazhar Ali Shah and schoolteacher Wazir Ahmad Dahar.
