SIALKOT, April 3: The police claimed to have arrested two main suspects involved in a Rs30 million bank robbery after a week of the incident.

Sialkot DPO Nisar Ahmad Saroya told newsmen here on Saturday that the police arrested Nazir Khan and Mir Zaman Khan from Kohat during a checking at a toll plaza.

They belonged to an inter-provincial gang of robbers wanted in many cases of dacoity, robbery, theft and kidnap for ransom, he added.

He claimed that the other suspects would be arrested soon.

Five robbers had taken ornaments, cash, prize bonds, national and foreign currencies, savings certificates and other valuables worth Rs30 million from 42 lockers in the Muslim Commercial Bank's Railway Road branch.

The DPO said the Sialkot police arrested 76 members of 17 gangs of robbers, besides recovering six cars, 35 motorcycles and other stolen property worth Rs3.2 million during the first quarter of 2004.

They arrested 1,129 proclaimed offenders during the period, besides recovering 125 kilograms of hashish, 4.4 kgs of opium, seven kgs of heroin, 800 bottles of liquor and unearthed 33 distilleries during a special campaign, he said.

DPO Saroya said the police recovered three grenades, eight Kalashnikovs, three stenguns, 151 rifles, 183 guns, 279 pistols, 40 revolvers, nine carbines and 29 draggers from anti-social elements.

He said the Saddar police have also arrested five members on an inter-district gang of robbers known as Tokka Gang.

Daska ASP Nasir Aftab said the Daska police have arrested four members of Irfan alias Fana Changar Gang who deprived an exporter of his new car (LXL-3200) at gunpoint on Friday night.
