ISLAMABAD, April 16: Peshawar University on Saturday captured the men’s volleyball crown at the second University Games with a knockout of Punjab University.

The Peshawar boys went down in the first set but recovered to score an exciting 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 victory.

Government College University Lahore finished third in the competition by blanking Agriculture University Peshawar 25-16, 25-22, 25-17.

With another two days for the Games to end, Punjab University led the medals table with 29 gold, 22 silver and 11 bronze medals having accumulated 562 points.

They were followed by University of Jamshoro with 161 points and 19 medals, five of which were gold.

Lying in third place was the University of Peshawar who had picked up 149 points with five gold, as many silver and nine bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the men’s singles tennis title went to Saad Baloch of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro who outplayed Islamia University Bahawalpur’s Sarmad Hussain 6-4, 6- 3.

Results: Squash (semifinals): Peshawar University bt NED University Karachi 2-1; Iqra University Quetta bt Liaquat University of Medical and Health Science, Jamshoro 2-1.

Quarterfinals: Iqra University Quetta bt Government Collge University Lahore 3-0; University of Peshawar bt University of Lahore 3-0; NED Univesity Karachi bt College of Business Management Karachi 3-0; Liaquat University of Medical and Health Science Jamshoro bt Punjab University 3-0.

Tennis (men’s singles final): Saad Baloch (Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro) bt Sarmad Hussain (Islamia University Bahawalpur) 6-4, 6-3. Third place playoff: Noman Yahya (Bahria) bt Samad Baloch (NUST) 6-4, 6-4.

Volleyball (men’s final): Peshawar University bt Punjab University 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. Third place playoff: Government College University Lahore bt Agriculture University Peshawar 25-16, 25-22, 25-17.
